Little Adventures in OZ Book 1. Eric Shanower. Before his bigtime stint of adapting Marvel Comics' Oz comics, Eric Shanower did five one-shot graphic novels through First Comics and later on Dark Horse Comics. The first story is Enchanted Apples Of Oz where a sorceress named Valynn comes out of a hundred year siesta to reveal a tree holding magic apples which hold all the magic in the land of Oz, and the long-hidden Wicked Witch of the South and her overenthusiastic suitor try to steal them.

Shanower is the writer of the comic series Little Nemo: Return to Slumberland with art by Gabriel Rodriguez. This series resurrects Winsor McCay's classic comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland for a modern audience. Shanower's illustrations have appeared in magazines, in childrens books, and on television.

In the marvelous Land of Oz, magic is always around the next corner. Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and their many friends can't stop plunging into one adventure after another. Wonder and magic abound in this collection of "The Enchanted Apple of Oz" and "The Ice Kind of Oz" by award-winning cartoonist Eric Shanower.

Most Oz comic books are adaptations ranging from a very badly illustrated volume I found today at the local library which I can't give you mo Eric Shanower is clearly an Oz fan that's a given. He is well versed in the universe and it shows in the loving care that he takes to illustrate as well as write these little Ozzy adventures. There have been a lot of people who have taken and expanded on the Oz universe, I would like the privilege someday, but very few have taken it to the comic book page.

The Oz books form a book series that begins with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) and relate the fictional history of the Land of Oz. Oz was created by author L. Frank Baum, who went on to write fourteen full-length Oz books. All of the Baum written books are in the public domain in the United States.

I've enjoyed these "new" Oz stories since i was a kid and I'm still fascinated by Eric Shanower's beautiful art. The stories are short but you cannot beat the value in these collections.
Not only have extras been added, but the artwork has been touched up to make it more accurate. (For example, Omby Amby was missing his green whiskers in a scene and they have been added, while in another, Dorothy and her friends are now wearing green glasses while in the Emerald City where in the original version they were not)
The one down size is that these versions have been shrunk down to a much smaller size. They are still readable and cares were taken to preserve the art and text. While I already own the full sized versions I bought this one for my nephew to read and it was much more manageable for his hands than the big ones.

This collection of Eric Shanower's graphic Oz novels is a must-have for Oz enthusiasts. Mr. Shanower is the true successor to John R. Neill, who illustrated the original Oz series. My favorite tale, "The Enchanted Apples of Oz" is a terrific story, modern yet still full of Baum's original spirit. The drawings are perfection, full of details and movement.
