Concepts in Modern Biology book.

The book presents important mathematical concepts, methods and tools in the context of essential questions raised in modern biology. Designed around the principles of project-based learning and problem-solving, the book considers biological topics such as neuronal networks, plant population growth, metabolic pathways, and phylogenetic tree reconstruction. Spans several mathematical techniques at basic to advanced levels. Offers broad perspective on the uses of algebraic geometry/polynomial algebra in molecular systems biology.

Contributors in biology, in mathematics, and in bioinformatics introduce undergraduate students and their instructors to more applications .

Contributors in biology, in mathematics, and in bioinformatics introduce undergraduate students and their instructors to more applications of discrete mathematics to biology than can be found in standard textbooks. The goal is not to be comprehensive, but to open the door to more advanced and specialized resources. Raina Robeva was born in Sofia, Bulgaria. She is a professor of Mathematical Sciences at Sweet Briar College and lives in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The modern roots of conservation biology can be found in the late 18th-century Enlightenment period particularly in England and Scotland. A number of thinkers, among them notably Lord Monboddo, described the importance of "preserving nature"; much of this early emphasis had its origins in Christian theology. Since 2000, the concept of landscape scale conservation has risen to prominence, with less emphasis being given to single-species or even single-habitat focused actions.

Concepts in Modern Biology. The book includes numerous insightful analogies and covers somewhat offbeat topics that an instructor could easily adapt to enliven classroom presentations. Summing Up: Highly recommended. eBook 28,88 €. price for Russian Federation (gross). Lower-level undergraduates and above. P. E. Hertz, CHOICE, Vol. 45 (2), 2007).

The Modern Biology course covers specialized and somewhat advanced topics in the fields of cellular biology . This course is built around six key concepts that provide unifying explanations for how and why structures are formed and processes occur throughout your study of biology.

The Modern Biology course covers specialized and somewhat advanced topics in the fields of cellular biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics. It does not cover organismal biology or taxonomy. Because it is not possible to cover the breadth of modern molecular biology in one semester, an understanding of these key concepts will provide a basis for extension of your knowledge to biological systems beyond the specifics covered in this course.

I used this textbook in a high-school biology course more than twenty years ago. Since that time, I have often wanted a simple, clear explanation of this biological process or that one, without foraying into overly complicated diagrams or extraneous biochemical details. Kraus's book satisfies that niche. While the explanations and pictures wouldn't win him a Ph.D., the book brims with handy, useful, and straightforward explanations. I can browse them and say, "Oh, yeah, I remember that." It's an easy read and it has just the information you want. It's delightful to see that I can still find useful in 2001 what I aced through in 1975!
