When Kn < ., continuum mechanics (opposed to quantum mechanics when Kn 1) formulations are valid and can be applied (Chung 2007). Combining a continuous extracellular space with the presence of both Newtonian (CSF) (Bloomfield and others 1998 ) and non-Newtonian (viscoelastic cell membranes ) fluids in the brain prompted formation of the continuum mechanics hypothesis of ultrasonic neuromodulation  .

Continuum mechanics is a branch of mechanics that deals with the mechanical behavior of materials modeled as a continuous mass rather than as discrete particles. The French mathematician Augustin-Louis Cauchy was the first to formulate such models in the 19th century. Modeling an object as a continuum assumes that the substance of the object completely fills the space it occupies.

He has also authored Computational Fluid Dynamics and Applied Continuum Mechanics, both published by Cambridge University Press.

This book offers a concise, applications-oriented introduction to continuum mechanics. It begins with a review of vectors and tensors and their applications to the domain and boundary integrals. The remaining chapters cover kinematics, equilibrium and kinetics, elastic solids, and Newtonian fluids. Every chapter includes numerous worked examples and problems. By providing a reasonable balance between mathematical rigor and practical applications, between solids and fluids, and between linear and nonlinear theories, this timely book will be useful to engineering students, as well as practicing engineers and applied scientists.
