Climate change and the resulting impacts on humans and the biosphere are among the most pressing problem of the 21st century, yet most individuals, be they journalists, politicians and policy makers, business and industry, NGOs, activists or students and academics who are not climate specialists have only a fragmented knowledge of the climate system and how it works and of Climate change.

This book presents the views of leading scientists on our knowledge of the global ocean circulation following completion of the observational phase of the World Ocean Circulation Experiment. The book guides the reader through the analysis, interpretation, modeling, and synthesis of these data. This book will be of value to those interested in the global oceans, in climate variability and change, and in the oceanic uptake of anthropogenic carbon, particularly oceanographers, meteorologists, and other climate scientists.

John A. Church (born 1951) is an expert on sea level and its changes. He was co-convening lead author (with Jonathan M. Gregory) for the chapter on Sea Level in the IPCC Third Assessment Report. He was also a co-convening lead author for the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report. He is a member of the Joint Scientific Committee of the WCRP. He was a project leader at CSIRO, until 2016.

Ocean Circulation and Climate belongs on every climate geek's holiday wish lis. he book, subtitled ‘A 21st Century Perspective", is both timely and important. It contains 31 chapters that span the present state of knowledge

Ocean Circulation and Climate belongs on every climate geek's holiday wish lis. It contains 31 chapters that span the present state of knowledge. The 78 authors provide a truly international perspective as recognized experts in their respective fields.

The book represents all the knowledge we currently have on ocean circulation. It presents an up-to-date summary of the state of the science relating to the role of the oceans in the physical climate system. The book is structured to guide the reader through the wide range of world ocean circulation experiment (WOCE) science in a consistent way. Cross-references between contributors have been added, and the book has a comprehensive index and unified reference list. The book is simple to read, at the undergraduate level

Climate change and the resulting impacts on humans and the biosphere are one of the most pressing problems of the 21st century; yet most individuals—be they journalists, politicians, policy makers, from business, NGOs, activists or academics—who are not climate specialists have only a fragmented basic knowledge of the climate system and of the nature and differences between natural and human induced climate change. This book, written by two of the world’s leading climate experts, with the support of the Joint Scientific Committee of the World Climate Research Program, is the first comprehensive synthesis of the broad spectrum of our current knowledge of climate science, impacts and the interactions of climate and society. Coverage includes an explanation of the climate system and the processes that govern climate variability and change, where the sources and limitations of climate information come from, how it is modeled and interpreted and the uncertainties of climate prediction, as well.
