We present APHENA results on the effects of particulate matter (PM) < or 10 microm in aerodynamic diameter (PM . We explored the impact of potential environmental and socioeconomic factors that may modify this association.

We present APHENA results on the effects of particulate matter (PM) < or 10 microm in aerodynamic diameter (PM(10)) on the daily number of deaths for all ages and for those < 75 and or 75 years of age. METHODS: In the first stage of a two-stage analysis, we used Poisson regression models, with natural and penalized splines, to adjust for seasonality, with various degrees of freedom

Characteristics of particulate matter in rural Alberta locations were examined and compared with those in cities. Inhalable particulate measurements from 1984 to 1994 at Edmonton and Calgary reveal similar physical and chemical properties which are comparable to other Canadian prairie cities.

Characteristics of particulate matter in rural Alberta locations were examined and compared with those in cities. Mean PM. and PM10 concentrations at remote rural Alberta locations are . and . μgm−3, respectively. Because of geographical and emission-source differences, particulate measurements in these two Alberta cities exhibit characteristics significantly different from those obtained in eastern North American cities.

A particulate matter sampler is an instrument for measuring the properties (such as mass concentration or chemical composition) of particulates in the ambient air. Two different types of particulate matter samplers exist that measure particulate mass concentration: manual samplers and automated samplers.

Environmental Effects

Environmental Effects. Particulate matter is responsible for the reduction in visibility. Visibility is principally affected by fine particles that are formed in the atmosphere from gas-phase reactions. Little is known of the effects of particulate matter in general on vegetation. The combination of particulate matter and other pollutants such as sulfur dioxide may affect plant growth.

However, several aspects of the relationship between particulate matter with a 50% cut-off aerodynamic diameter of 10 μm (PM(10)) and respiratory mortality require further investigation. The aim of the present study was to assess the PM(10)-respiratory mortality association in Italy and examine potentially susceptible groups. All deaths from natural (n 276,205) and respiratory (n 19,629) causes among subjects aged ≥ 35 yrs in 10 northern, central and southern Italian cities in 2001-2005 were included in the study. Pollution data for PM(10), nitrogen dioxide and ozone were also obtained.

Atmospheric particulate matter is a critical factor for many regional urban areas of Umbria (Central Italy region). During 2013 the monitoring air quality network, managed by ARPA Umbria, has been upgraded to Legislative Decree of 13 August 2010, . 55 and an analytical study about chemical composition of PM10 (Particulate Matter with diameter of 10 micrometres or less) over all the region has been started
