England in the Middle Ages concerns the history of England during the medieval period, from the end of the 5th century through to the start of the Early Modern period in 1485. When England emerged from the collapse of the Roman Empire, the economy was in tatters and many of the towns abandoned. After several centuries of Germanic immigration, new identities and cultures began to emerge, developing into kingdoms that competed for power.

The Middle Ages: Birth of an Idea

The Middle Ages: Birth of an Idea. The phrase Middle Ages tells us more about the Renaissance that followed it than it does about the era itself. Starting around the 14th century, European thinkers, writers and artists began to look back and celebrate the art and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. This way of thinking about the era in the middle of the fall of Rome and the rise of the Renaissance prevailed until relatively recently. Crusaders, who wore red crosses on their coats to advertise their status, believed that their service would guarantee the remission of their sins and ensure that they could spend all eternity in Heaven.

This fantasy "sword and sorcery" collection contains a range of stories, so of course some will appeal to some people and others to other people, but by and large this "sword and sorcery" collection fell flat to me. Holland, Parker, Liu, and Cherryh wrote fairly good tales, so if you are a big fan of one of these authors you might want to look at this book. Martin's own short story was a weak, dry telling of past Westeros history.

The great hall was the centre of a castle and the walls were decorated with tapestries. Everyone except the lord sat on benches. There was a minstrel gallery for musicians and singers. At night, the servants slept on the floor. The great hall would have at least one fireplace with a chimney. This was a Norman invention and stopped the room filling with smoke. The lord had his own room, called the solar, and his own four-poster bed, with curtains for privacy. At the top of the castle, the lady would have a day-room for herself and her maids-in-waiting.
