Awesome book for both adults and children. My child (age 8) was so into this story he said "How did they get under water and watch the hermit crab? It is like they followed him around under water and watched everything he did!"
Another Holling Clancy Holling book my kids loved was Paddle to the Sea. My child (age 10) said to me when I paused a little too long between pages "play the movie!" she was so into it. Such rich writing and enjoyable fun learning about geography.

This book contains wonderful illustrations, both full page and in the margins, which both enhance the story and provide the reader with interesting scientific tidbits. The story of the life of a hermit crab is very interesting for a kid who loved science, like me. I first read it when i was in 3rd grade, which is about the right age.

After I ordered this book a year ago I have now re read it and found it to be an engrossing and intriguing experience! The whole book is about Pagoo or Pagurus the hermit crab. The writing and exquisite illustrations illustrate his life story beautiffully. From his starting out as small as a pencil dot to his full grown size of a couple of inches in length the delicate drawings take us through his world in Tide Pool town! Full colour pictures also depict baby shrimp, baby squid, baby crabs, and plankton creatures swimming around Pagoo in the great sea!

As Pagoo molted he is shown in different stages of development, looking like a young crawfish in the early stage and later more like a hermit crab in search of a home(sea shell). Pagoo's travels took him through a mussel land and after meeting up with barnacles and a starfish he found room and board on the back of a lady hermit crab whose barnacles provided a home for Pagoo!

After being swallowed by a fish and chased by a seagull Pagoo found a shell and had a narrow escape from a huge octopus! Finally Pagoo mated with a female hermit crab and afterwards she had many eggs to start the lifecycle again! PAGOO is a lovely, fasinating book! I'm glad I found it on amazon.com after I had lost it many years ago! Glad to get it in hardcover, complete with full colour slip cover! Highly recommended!!

This was one of my favorite books as a child. Now I give it as gifts to kids to encourage their reading. I just gave this away again and his mom gave me a very enthusiastic thumb's up. Her toddler carries it around with him everywhere and wants it read to him repeatedly. I can't say enough about touching a child's imagination and teaching sea life that is included in this book.

These books are a delight. So much information and so intriguing to the young listener. I adore these books. I have all of them and now I buy them for friends. The reading is a good effort. But they stories are told so well that the children remember them years later. They smile when they see them when they are all grown up and they cant wait to read them to their own children. I wish more modern writers took notes about the older ones. They could learn a few things about how to teach and talk to children so they will stay interested more than 10 minutes!

And what great nostalgia! I highly recommend Pagoo to all kids and young-at-heart. This was first door in my life that opened up into science. My family often went to the beach, and in particular there were massive tide pools there. I collect hundreds of specimens to fiddle with, show off to the family gathered around the fire pit, then put back into the pool, including of course, hermit crabs. I squealed with delight when I caught my first one. I'll never forget it. It was rather small, very pretty and delicate, and had lots of purple. I fancied it was a female version of Pagoo, LOL. If you can get those kinds of experiences into your kids these days, you are fantastically lucky.

Can't believe I missed this as a kid, glad I got to read it as an adult. Bought it as a gift for someone who loved this book as a kid. Totally understand how and why he remembered it 40 years later. Would suggest as a gift for any smart, inquisitive and/or science minded kid. Or for kids who like pretty pictures. Or adults who like poking around in tide-pools. Or kids who don't get to poke around in tide pools. Or...
