"Readers are a lot like detectives," says Debra Goodman. "We use clues from the author's text. We use strategies to try to figure out what's going on. We make up theories to solve the mystery of each text, and we check out our theories as we read along." Here are two engaging books in one: a smart professional book for teachers and a fun "nonworkbook" for students. The teacher section offers a comprehensive overview of the reading process, with step-by-step instructions for sponsoring a Reading Detective Club, analyses of each case, and discussions of topics such as second-language readers and dialect variations. The student section features a series of reproducible mystery cases presented by student-detectives Jacob, Michele, and Scott. Children are encouraged to solve cases - and come to understand their own approaches to literacy - by exploring the meaning clues, language (grammar) clues, and graphic clues in printed texts.

Central to The Reading Detective Club is the importance of miscue analysis as a vital assessment tool. This book is perfect for parents and teachers! It has been my go-to resource for over 11 years; the book is timeless! The reason it endures in my personal library is that it is practical, efficient, and inspiring for young readers!

Goodman's goal with this book is to help students adopt a positive, "I can!" attitude towards reading. The information and activities deliver on that goal! She encourages parents, teachers, and students to *value* miscues when reading. In other words, she sees "mistakes" as valuable clues that tell us what the student is actually doing RIGHT.

The first half is a wonderful, simple-to-understand summary of some research and mechanics; it's perfect for a classroom teacher, but just as accessible to a parent.

The second half of the book is a series of *self-teaching* strategy lessons. That's right... self-teaching! Goodman did a remarkable job of creating fun and motivating lessons that effortlessly guide students through their own journey of uncovering the clues hidden in their miscues. It's a fun book!

As I already mentioned, this book is very accessible for parents, but it is just as valuable for teachers. In a small section at the end, Goodman included "scheduling" recommendations to help teachers create an effectively balanced literacy curriculum; one which includes the very valuable lessons in this book.

The value of this efficient book cannot be overstated! Get it. You won't be sorry!

NOTE TO AMAZON: I have had this book in my possession since 2001-02. I most likely purchased it from Amazon since I purchased all of my grad-school books from Amazon, but my account data only goes back to 2006, so I can't very.

Debbie Goodman has created a motivating way for intermediate students to discover reading processes. Debbie, the daughter of Ken and Yetta Goodman, has written several well designed activities to help students do detective work to discover how our brains work when we read. As an intermediate reading specialist, I have used this book with fourth grade struggling readers and their teachers. The lessons teach themselves by allowing students to discover, discuss, and confirm. These activities have helped teachers to learn about cue systems and strategies as well as their students.
