She co-authored The Secret Life of Words: Poetry Exercises and Activities with Maria Damon. Her books also include Poof! and Other Overhead Math Stories and The Buddy Book. Ms. Franco has taught elementary through high school. She and her husband have three sons and live in Palo Alto, California.

My Very Own Poetry Collec. The poems in this personal poetry collection have been carefully crafted to meet the specific needs of emergent readers and ESL students who are learning sight words. Title 1 Approved The first 100 sight words are introduced and interwoven throughout the collection. Patterned, repetitive poetry is used throughout to encourage and give confidence to the emergent reader. The advantage of poetry is that students can see the pattern right before their eyes. They don't have to flip the page of a book, which can interrupt the visual pattern for the reader who is first learning.
They're full of unusual words and fun new vocabulary. Each poem has a student poem page with an engaging illustration.

The book is a wonderful collection of 101 poems that came of age in the 19th and early 20th century - the original collection was published in 1916. I am a writer and a reader of poetry. I have read a number of poetry books. This particular rendition is a hardcover copy, bound in the original burgundy cloth. I love this book and cherish this collection. However, this book is one of the finest, if not the very finest, compilation of great poetry that I have been blessed to purchase, own, and read.

When I taught first 06-26-2010, 07:44 AM. I used a ton of Shel Silverstein for their humor and kid-friendliness and then several I remembered and loved from my elementary school days. They were by Christina Rosetti and Robert Louis Stevenson. She also has a collection for second graders. I keep a poem binder for myself.
