This well written book held me and gave me great insight into the holdings of Martin's hands on observation. this book in some ways reads more like an action novel than instruction. this book always seems balance insight with explanation. Shortly put this book is fresh air it lacks the self serving attitude so many texts on the subject possess.

Mixed martial arts expert Martin Faulks has written a very accessible and insightful book on modern ninjutsu, and I think it should be in the library of anyone interested in (or studying) Taijutsu, Ninjutsu or the modern application of martial arts techniques to western society. What I found refreshing was Faulks's ability to be objective despite his intensely personal quest (and the petty rivalries within the discipline) to discover a contemporary understanding of this ancient art. Faulks really transitions through three phases toward his ultimate goal through the book, which is as much memoire as it is an introduction to modern Ninjutsu. The first is a skills and technique-based phase, effectively capturing the romanticism inherent in Ninja myth. The second is a spritual phase where Faulks seeks a more wordly philosophy suitable to today's pressures and concerns but enhanced by a more complete understanding of basic Ninjutsu prinicipls and values. The third phase really pulls all this together through a sojourn to Japan and studying with a real ninja master (those who study this martial art know who it is). Faulks does an excellent job of trying to find the core values that are more relevant to living in the modern world while also respecting the Japanese/Asian roots of the discipline. Oh, and along the way, the reader is treated to an introduction to basic principles and philosophy of Ninjutsu. As an adult began studying this martial art (his first) four year ago, I would have found this book very valuable; Faulks puts all the stuff I learn in the dojo in broader perspective. And I think the lessons he draws have far greater application than simply in the relatively narrow world of Ninjutsu.

This was the first book about Ninja I have had the pleasure of reading. This book provides knowledge that can be used practically. It also provides many references to further investigate as there really is a great deal of information touched on. There are things in the book that can be of benefit for those interested in human psychology as well. There is a great deal of worth in this book even for those not interested in just the martial arts aspect of the ninja. The book is very easy to read and is very engaging as it held my interest throughout. It's also the type of book you can go back to over and over again as it's not a read once and then throw it out kind of book, it has lasting value.
