It just goes to show you how a dunderhead like Howie Long who did a lot of steroids can go all the way to the top of his field without actually knowing anything. Football for dummies is a good title however, if you read this, you will be a dummy at football. Keep selling trucks Howie and keep your job on FOX because you can't write books, even if they're about football!

By Howie Long, John Czarnecki. End zone: A 10-yard-long area at each end of the field. You score a touchdown when you enter the end zone in control of the football

By Howie Long, John Czarnecki. American football is about trying to make points by passing, carrying, or kicking an oblong ball (with two pointed ends) into your opponent’s end zone. Football is a rough-and-tumble game with its own jargon, including some terms that are just plain odd. For example, a strong safety is a defender, and a regular safety is a play that scores two points - go figure. You score a touchdown when you enter the end zone in control of the football. If you’re tackled in your own end zone while in possession of the football, the other team gets a safety.

I got this to try to learn the rules of football, being one of those people who basically know nothing other than if they're moving in the right direction, it's good. This is NOT the book for this. This seems more like it's written for coaches who want to improve their teams. I mean, I've read the whole book and I still don't know how many people are on a team, what the difference is between a halfback, fullback, etc. I

Having never been around football growing up and not having any friends really into the sport I found myself at a loss when around my boyfriend during football season. Rather than continue to bother him with what for most American would be stupid questions, I picked up this book. If you're like me and just looking for basic knowledge so you don't feel like an idiot when watching a game or listening to football talk I highly recommend this. The chapters are broken down so you don't need to read the whole thing, just the parts geared toward spectators (some sections are written for new players, coaches etc).

I became interested in football for the first time this year with an exciting college football season. I've tried to watch NFL football with my husband but all it looked like to me was, as my daughter says, "A bunch of dudes piling on top of each other." I really wanted to begin to learn football, so I bought this book. I love it! I've got sticky notes in it, underlines, highlights and margin notes. I give it 4 1/2 stars because some of the descriptions still assume I know or understand just a little more than I do. Plus, the index is not comprehensive enough. I've watched games after using the book and understood more of what I saw on the field, and after watching a game I understood more of what I read in the book...so it worked both ways. I still have a long way to go but am now looking forward to next fall and the beginning of football season. I am even entertaining the idea of buying season tickets to watch my favorite team.

My husband has been a football fan all his life. I didn't want to become a "football widow" and honestly wanted to learn the game so I could enjoy it as well. Howie Long does a great job of explaining the rules in laymen's terms so you can learn about the game so you can enjoy it both live and on TV

I bought this book for my 13-year-old grandson who has played youth soccer all his life and never was too interested in football, much less as a player. In my mind, a basic knowledge and appreciation of the game is essential to getting through life in that it provides a common topic for guys to talk about at any stage in life. Before giving it to him, I read the book myself to see if it was what I was looking for.

I have been a fan of Howie Long since the days he played for the Oakland Raiders. I think he would make a great coach at any level. Now that I have admitted to bias, here's what I think of his book.

I'm not sure it's right for the reader who has never watched a football game, although that may be a rarity. Nor will it be necessarily appropriate for anyone who has played high school, college or professional football. For everyone else, I think it's a good way to learn the basics and to appreciate how and what every player position contributes to the success of his team on the field. The rules, including penalties and officials' signals, are clearly explained. Basic plays are deconstructed and illustrated. Both offense and defense are given equal attention. Football jargon is defined. There are tips and suggestions for people learning to play various positions. You come away with a better appreciation for the subtleties and strategies the average person might miss.

This is not a book to be read once and then put away. Someone who is not all that familiar with the game may want to refer to it during and after a game.

Lastly, through the whole book Long demonstrates his absolute love of the game and his sense of decency and fairness.

My grandson's dad and I are going to enjoy watching a game with him.

A good book to introduce you to the names of the various positions and what they do. A bit light on strategy and tactics which was why I bought.Glad I did. It will help in the playoffs and superbowl
