This is a good book on politics (small "p"). I contrast it with Jeffrey Pfeffer's "Power...." in a class I teach and it is a useful tract. Pfeffer studies power as it is, without any discussion of ethics or why it should be exercised. DeLuca focuses on organization behavior and maneuvering within an ethically based paradigm (I suspect because as a consultant he had to sell his views on Political Savvy to clients who at least like to pretend all their actions are viewed through some ethical lens.)

While DeLuca's book is useful, it is a little pollyannaish in that it tends to discount selfishness as a motivator in many organizational settings (not entirely, but enough that it seems the author is selling his model in a way purchases will be receptive).

The strength of DeLuca's book (and there are many) is a mapping model he lays out for political assessment. His model seeks to assign values to players, relationships and goals in situations where an individual or team seeks to move an organization from point A to point B. This mapping tool, thus loads with assumptions, is designed to aid in the development of strategies for goal achievement. While real life is immune to such exact representations, the model is very useful as a way to organize thinking in political situations where there will be allies and opponents, scarce resources and hidden agendas.

The book is well written and wraps the author's mapping model around a corporate case study. Very useful for students of organization politics and behavior.

I wish had read this book 10 years ago. Politics are often thought of as dirty backroom schemes, deals and manipulations practiced by PC schmoozers and butt kissers. This book teaches exactly how to deal with such people. This book teaches you that politics are present everywhere, including schools and churches. So politics are not good or bad. Politics are nothing but a person’s or group’s agenda. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn how to deal with manipulative butt kissers who will do anything to advance their personal agendas.

As much as we'd like to think we can escape politics at work we can't. Its human nature. So what can you do? Well you can sit with your head in the sand and say you don't want to play, sit back and watch the game and be a commentator, jump into the fray and defeat your enemies any way possible or jump into the fray and do the best you can in the most ethical way possible.

If the last description is the one you are interested in doing then pick up this book. It describes the different styles of leaderships in companies, how to utilize influence to achieve your goal and do it in a way that doesn't throw someone else under the bus. It gives great insight into how to spot the most powerful players in your organization (you may be surprised that its not always the people at the top) and how to utilize that knowledge for the best of the company. Political savvy isn't about doing the best for you and only you its about doing the best for the company and hopefully you get rewarded along with it.

This is an easy to read and easy to understand book with some great ideas. I will be forever grateful that I had to read it for a graduate class on ethics.

I grabbed to book to prepare for a promotion I wanted. The position and promotion were political and I was not. I learned much about the political process. I had always been taught and was of the opinion that those who work hard, do the right things will be rewarded. I have learned this is only partially true. One has to work hard at the right things and some of those have nothing at all to do with the work to be done. This book breaks down the power process, provides examples and worksheets for readers to use to improve their political prowess. This is not a book just to read; you have to take the time to do the exercises to achieve political savvy.

I just finished the book and I learned a great deal from it. I found it a little hard to get through, which is probably a good indicator that I needed it. I am one of those who have always had a basic distaste for organizational politics.
But what I found here would have helped me immensely had I read it earlier. Very little in the book does not pass the common sense test, and much of it causes you to look at things in a way that not only removes the 'politics? Yuck' factor but makes you realize that organizational politics is really how things are done, so you better at least have a working knowledge of it.
I thought the organization of the book was among the best I have seen and thought the summary sections were excellent.

This book was required reading for my leadership course. I learned the value of being politically saavy, and the strategies to help me navigate organizational politics. The author explains why or politics is a good thing, he identifies those that benefit from being politically saaviness. I benefited from the mapping template explained in the book. Knowing who is important, why it is important to connect with those that can help me.

I like it, but then again I had a specific reason for reading it. It does employee more of a process oriented mindset and formula, though that is not necessarily a shortcoming. I have coached thousands of individuals and can say that tha process oriented approach will not be attractive to some who are less disciplined, more spontaneous and/or like to shoot more from the hip.
