I slowly opened my eyes, my vision blurred. My heart was racing and I tried to look around, to see where my attacker was. Thankfully, he was gone. I pushed myself up with trembling arms. I pushed myself up with trembling arms inful to breathe and I couldn’t see out of my right eye. My entire face felt like it was on fire. I made my way slowly back to the office. It was late, but I knew that Uncle Bob was still in the building. He was always the first one in and the last to leave.

This was a somewhat depressing story about a young girl who has loved only two men in her life and one more than the other. After breaking it off after three years with Tommy, Megan is back home working at her family's law firm. Her long time love, Shane, suddenly needs a place to stay and cannot stay at his girlfriend, Allison's place. Naturally, he turns to his long time friend Megan and she agrees, knowing how difficult it will be to live with the guy she is in love with. Of course, they finally get together, but he is called away at all hours of the day and night and after her house is vandalized, her mother's house is broken into and her policeman brother is shot in a drug bust, Megan is starting to think something might be up. Then her ex boyfriend and FBI agent Tommy tells her Shane is bad news but she defends him and throws Tommy out of her house. Just one bad thing after another happens.

My main problem with this book is that we are told that Shane loves Megan but never see any evidence of him doing anything other than using her. He is not an honorable guy to begin with and his apathy towards Megan's love life over the years and his own flaunting of girls in front of her does not predispose one to believe that he has always loved her. This makes the book a lot less romantic and really just a book about a girl who makes bad choices when it comes to men. Honestly, Megan is just clueless (so are a lot of other characters if they didn't know Shane was dealing drugs) and purposely ignores her instincts. I found this frustrating and disappointing.

The Broken Road is a friends to lovers story about Megan and Shane with a romantic suspense thrown into it. Megan is pretty well rounded and has her life together all except her love life. She is in love with her childhood friend who doesn't show any signs of those feelings being reciprocated until after a break up with a guy she was seeing. If you do not read the summary of the book (like me), you will think that the love story will be between Megan and Alex. Without giving away any spoilers, that doesn't happen. The romance moves fast once the two admit to one another their feelings, however, Shane has a lot of secrets he is hiding which causes some confusion until FBI agent Tommy (and Meghan's former fiance) enters the picture. Then the action begins. Honestly, it was hard to put the book down. I am rating this a 4 star, because I feel the drama between Meghan and Alex was left flat. Usually when there is a break up, someone tries to contact the other person and it is like he disappeared from the story completely which left me wondering his story through the whole book thinking he would pop up at some point. Other than that, I enjoyed the book a lot.

The Broken Road is a riveting romantic suspense novel that follows the complicated friends to lovers relationship of Megan and Shane.

Author Melissa Huie weaves a multi-layered tale of friendship, unrequited love, drama, suspense, secrets, passion, and danger that takes the reader on one hell of a wild ride.

Megan has secretly been in love with her childhood friend Shane for years, but it was an unrequited love. When Shane shows up at Megan's door needing a place to live, fate has a way of changing their relationship from friendship to lovers, only to send their fledgling happiness and lives spiraling out of control when Shane's secretive past rises to the surface. With danger lurking around the corner, Megan and Shane are forced to make hard choices that will change their lives forever.

The Broken Road is a compelling tale that has a great mixture of steamy romance, drama, suspense, and intriguing twists and turns that are cleverly interwoven throughout the story. It is the kind of story that keeps the reader sitting on the edge of their seats and wondering what will happen next to Megan and Shane. While Megan is a strong girl that you can't help but like; Shane is the one who keeps the reader guessing, and just when you think you have him figured out, he turns around and isn't the person you expected him to be. And then when you add in the element of danger to Megan and Shane's story, the author takes their relationship to another level ... but alas, she teases the reader with a cliffhanger ending that leaves the reader wanting more. Megan and Shane's complicated story continues in Broken Promises, the second book in the series.

The Broken Road is the first book in The Broken Road Series.

I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the characters, the storyline and the writing style.
It wasnt what i expected, it was so much more.
Megan, was actually a pretty good lead female and for me that says a lot because its rare I like any female at all.
Shane, his was the twist and turn for sure. Just when you think you have him figured out, he isnt what you expect. I kinda fell in love with him. I just wish there was more of him, as he is gone a lot. hopefully in book 2
The side characters are written well. I wouldnt mind getting Kyles story...I see something there that may need to be told.
The only thing that bothers me is Alex is there, and then hes gone and there isnt much background to that. I would have liked to see him at least try and plead his case.
There were a few grammar errors but it wasnt anything that distracted me from the story.
on the whole, it was a really good story and not the fluff of many loves stories out there. There is action, drama and some great sex and im really looking forward to seeing where Shane and Megan's relationship leads to from here.
I would definitely recommend this book.
