Dr. Dodson is a wonderful gem. Published by Thriftbooks. com User, 18 years ago. I bought this book in the early 70's when my youngest daughter was born and I became a single parent. I found Dodson's methods made complete sense and felt natural to me, encouraging the practical use of his techniques (his 10 commandments) which were as much for my benefit as my daughter's.

a book by Fitzhugh Dodson. Although Dodson recommends books and ideas from Haim Ginott, Rudolf Dreikurs, and Carl Rogers, he cautions that he disagrees with them about spanking kids. He says you need to do it at times, while these others, and the democratic parenting tradition they represent, say that violence towards kids and other authoritarian tactics are a very bad idea.

The original copy (1971) was a gift at the time of my older son's birth in that same year. I was of the generation raised on Dr. Spock and, while his advice was probably appropriate for that era, I found "How to Parent" to be extremely helpful for that new generation. I bought the recent copy to give as a gift to my younger son and his wife as they awaited the birth of their first child (I had already given the older son and wife a hard-bound copy of the same book when they were expecting their first born) and, in paging through it after it arrived, I was convinced that it still holds the wise, practical, professional and applicable advice to parents that it held for me 45 years ago.

(Forgive my English grammar, it is my second language)... I am currently reading my parents' spanish translation of this book ("El Arte de Ser Padres" is the Spanish title) from Dr. Dodson (I am currently the father of a 3 y/o kid) and as I go on from chapter to chapter I just can't believe how good this book is.
The funniest part of all this is that I used to go through this book (that has been in my parent's book shelves for 30 years now!) when I was a kid because of the fun cartoons it included, but I never thought it was such a well written and childern's-psychology-knowledge based book until a couple months ago when my mother took it out of the book shelve when I asked: "What should I do when my son hits someone else?"... I started reading one chapter and from then on I could not stop.
It is also amazing how all this theory still makes perfect sense 30 or 35 years later. My only regret is that I did not start reading it three years ago, when my son was still unborn. If you have kids, buy and read and save this book, for it deserves six stars instead of five. Regards!

Every parent should read this...BEFOREHAND. I read it after my child was 3 and wished I read it sooner.

Some things might be dated, like the watching TV section; but then, the book has been written in the early `70s. Briefly, this is the best parenting advice I've ever received and my son is lucky that I've got this book from his godmother. (by the way, I've already bought more than 10 copies that I offered to all new parents that I know)

Even though it is out of print, the sound advice that Dr. Dodson shares is so timely and makes so much sense. I have tried his methods 35 years ago raising my two sons. I lost my original copy and was delighted that I could buy it on line. I bought two copies, one for each son who have newborns of their own.

I didn't finish it yet but like the way author talk about different stages of development. Interesting way to present technical information.

I bought this book in 1977 when I was pregnant with my first daughter. I had been looking for guidance on how to be the best mother I could and when I started reading How to Parent, I inhaled it. I read the book cover to cover and like so many of the other reviewers, I thought the advice was common sense, very loving and psycologically oriented...it really resonated with me. My daughter is now pregnant now with her first child and we were discussing parenting. I told her about How to Parent and I was amazed at how much of the book I was able to recall. I am purchasing it hardcover for her as I am sure she will love it as much as I did. She and her sister are beautiful, loving and well adjusted women. I feel that this book was instrumental in the terrific people they have become.
