James Joyce was born in Dublin on 2 February 1882. He was the oldest of ten children in a family which, after brief prosperity, collapsed into poverty. He was none the less educated at the best Jesuit schools and then at University College, Dublin, where he gave proof of his extraordinary talent. In 1902, following his graduation, he went to Paris, thinking he might attend medical school there. Italy’s entrance into the First World War obliged Joyce to move to Zürich, where he remained until 1919.

Ulysses, novel by Irish writer James Joyce, first published in book form in 1922. Episode 1: Telemachus. It's now the middle of the night, sometime after 4am. Joyce didn't list a time in the schema for the final episode because he claims that Molly doesn't live her life by the clock. Ulysses opens at Martello Tower, several miles southeast of Dublin, at 8am on June 16, 1904. Stephen Dedalus (of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man fame) is renting the Tower with his friend (of sorts) Buck Mulligan. In eight sprawling breathless sentences, we get Molly's wandering thoughts as she lies awake in bed next to Bloom. Molly remembers her affair with Boylan in explicit sexual detail and reflects back on other lovers she has had over the years.
