“Excellence in Dementia Care” stands apart from other textbooks in this field. The book provides a comprehensive, holistic picture of dementia care that blends current research, theory and best practice. It is well-researched and well-referenced, with chapters written by leading experts from multiple disciplines, perspectives and countries. This eclectic and international approach leads to the richness and breadth of the material covered.
Topics are relevant and diverse spanning the continuum from diagnosis, through care planning and end of life. Other important topics covered include young-onset dementia, ethnicity and dementia, how dementia is portrayed in the arts and media, building dementia-friendly environments, relationships with family, staying healthy, and care transitions. Chapters on family, community, ethics, public health, and leadership demonstrate the broad appeal and relevance of this book to students across multiple disciplines and those involved in healthcare, policy and research.

The chapters are well-organized with clearly outlined learning objectives. Each chapter has a section that identifies debates and controversies, within a topic, that will be particularly useful for students to grasp the complexity of the issues and identify areas for further research. In addition, authors provide information resources at the end of each chapter for follow-up. A great strength of the book is the focus on translation of research into best practices in dementia care. In so doing, this book becomes part of the solution. Similarly, chapters include thoughtful exercises to allow students and readers to engage with each topic in ways that can only empower them to identify changes they can themselves begin to make. Authors have also presented meaningful and realistic case studies that will facilitate class discussion around topics. The inclusion of the person with dementia’s voice (and their family) throughout this book is artfully done through quotes and case studies that complement the research and theory presented.

Throughout, this book challenges the misconceptions and negative portrayals that surround dementia, and reframes the conversation from ‘what is not possible’ to “what is possible.’ On some level, given the global public health challenge dementia poses, everyone should read this book!

Excellence in Dementia Care is an all-inclusive book that gives caregivers and students alike guidance for caring for people with dementia. This book takes a patient-centered approach to providing extensive information about dementia and how to give those living with dementia the best care possible. Expert advice is given from leaders in geriatric research. The book is very organized and easy to navigate and is rich with references and related studies from beginning stages to end stages of dementia. There are helpful exercise sections and easy to find case examples in bold boxes that help identify them. The real life stories may help give caretakers solutions to problems. In addition, there are also helpful downloads and resources beyond the book's scope.

Some other specific parts of the book that stood out:
-There are questions throughout that relate to the specific section of the book that are thought-provoking and may help aid in real life scenarios. For example, Exercise 20.1 on page 365 has a good list of concrete questions one may ask to see if end-of-life care is necessary. Another example is Exercise 4.1 on page 74, that puts the reader in the position of asking how they might interpret someone's behavior who has dementia.
-Keeping with the theme of person-centered care, I appreciated chapter 6, Person-centered ethics. This book is packed with information, but also keeps the main focus in perspective: the PATIENT and their needs.
-MANY case examples and questions make this an engaging read and guide.
-Organization-wise, this is very readable and divided into short chapters that make the book manageable and easy to navigate.

Overall, I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in using an evidence-based approach to help those living with dementia in the best way possible.

Excellence in Dementia Care: Research into Practice is one of the most important books published on the topic of dementia. The perspectives taken by the authors are multi-dimensional and holistic in nature. Dementia is often seen as simply an organic illness that renders people cognitively impaired and only a mere shadow of who they once were as a person. This book dispels this myth and provides the reader with knowledge of the disease’s complexity, as well as strategies for new ways of communicating and interacting. The approach adopted by the authors is strength-based and empowering for both the professional working with the individual and for the individual themselves, thereby dispelling the hopelessness often projected at the mere mention of this illness. Informal and formal caregivers will benefit from the book’s discussion of best practices and the various options for providing an environment that is enriching for the individual. Finally, the challenges at end of life for the individual, and their family, friends, and professional caregivers, are discussed. This book is comprehensive, well-organized and successfully provides not only detailed information on dementia but also the how-to that is longed for by caregivers. I highly recommend this book for course instructors and for anyone providing care to someone diagnosed with dementia.
