GEORGE HOLMES is Chichele Professor of Medieval History and Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. His previous books include Dante (Past Masters, OUP, 1980), and Florence, Rome and the Origins of the Renaissance (OUP, 1986).

This book, the Oxford Illustrated History of Medieval Europe is perhaps a more traditional venture, in the sense that it is almost entirely preoccupied not only with politics, demography, and commerce, but that from the exclusive perspective of the nobility, despite an abundance of clerical and mercantile records.

This popular history, well-written by professional historians, is for the intelligent general reader.

Western civilization was created in medieval Europe. The Oxford History of Medieval Europe. The Oxford History of the Medieval World also examines such intriguing cultural subjects as the chivalric code of knights, popular festivals, and the proliferation of new art forms, and the catastrophic social effect of the Black Death. Authoritative and eminently readable, this book will entertain as much as it will educate. Western civilization was created in medieval Europe.

This is the most authoritative account of life in Medieval Europe between the fall of the Roman Empire and the coming of the Renaissance.Full coverage is given to all aspects of life in a thousand-year period which saw the creation of western civilization: from the empires and kingdoms of Charlemagne, the Byzantines, and the Hundred Years War, to the ideals of the crusades, the building of great cathedrals and the social catastrophe of the Black Death; the cultural worlds of chivalric knights, popular festivals, and new art forms. The chapters show the movement of the centre of gravity in European life from the Mediterranean to the north; and the authors explore the contrast between Byzantine and Renaissance cultures in the south and the new, complex political and social structures of north-west Europe, which by 1300 had the most advanced civilization the world had ever seen.

Oxford History... so you know right there its a great book. I mean, Oxford was there in the Middle Ages, A big plus is that book it is fully modern, meaning you are not left on your own to translate Latin or Medieval French phrases (you will run into this on older books about this period--go back far enough and English isn't even an option in England).

As far as this period of history goes, Norman Cantor is my favorite. But this is a great book, it covers most of the important happenings, it goes into descriptions of customs and dress, it is endlessly fascinating for anyone looking for history books covering the Medieval period of European history (aka the Middle Ages, or the now never used Dark Ages--which isn't an accurate description of the period, although it was an accurate description of the modern mind that wanted to look down on people it did not know, and couldn't be bothered to try to understand in the context of history)..

I purchased this book for a graduate school class. Well written by reputable scholars and easy to comprehend. Although it is required reading for the course, I am gaining a great deal of valuable information regarding Medieval Europe.

Others can speak to the scholarship of this anthology, my comments are to compare this smaller paperback edition (0192801333) to the hardback (0198200730) and two larger paperback editions, (0192854356) and (0198200730). The key word in the title is "illustrated".

The hardback edition has 26 full page color plates, 22 maps, and approximately 187
black/white photographs distributed throughout the book on good quality paper.
This smaller paperback has no color pictures except the front cover, 12 black/white plates, and the 22 maps.

The photography in the illustrated editions is excellent and adds greatly to the presentation of the authors. One cannot help but be impressed by the talent and craftsmanship exhibited by individuals in their time.

If the purchase price has lead the reader to this smaller paperback, my suggestion
is to go with a used hardback.

The book is a mess and sorely needs editing. The writing is incredibly dry and often just boils down to a list of kings in prose form. Many, many books have been written on European history, so dig a bit deeper and you'll find some great reads. This is more suitable for a student who takes one European history class in the lifetime and never studies it again.
