An English translation was provided by Elizabeth Haldane in 1892.

This volume of Hegel's Lectures on the History of Philosophy certainly struck me as the most interesting of the 3 volumes. Copleston’s eleven volume A History of Philosophy begins also with the pre-socratics in Greece. This volume deals I must admit that this was a better read than Schleiermacher's introductions to Plato's dialogues. We’ll follow roughly Hegel’s divisions.

The Hegel Lectures series is based on a selection of extant and recently discovered transcripts and manuscripts. The original lecture series are reconstructed so that the structure of Hegel's argument can be followed. This third volume of the lectures covers the medieval and modern periods, and includes fascinating discussion of scholastic, Renaissance, and Reformation philosophy, and of such great modern thinkers as Descartes, Locke, Leibniz, and especially Kant.

Hegel delivered his lectures on the history of philosophy nine times during his career, giving them for the first time in Winter 1805–06 in Jena prior to his publication of the Phenomenology of Spirit in 1807. He began to give them for a tenth time before his death in Berlin in 1831. Hegel understood the history of philosophy as philosophy, as showing how reason or spirit in the form of philosophy develops through successive stages to the point that philosophical thinking attains its own self-conscious and self-determinate mode of existence

The History of Philosophy as an accumulation of Opinions b. Proof of futility of Philosophical Knowledge obtained through History of Philosophy itself c. Explanatory remarks on the diversity in Philosophies. 2. Explanatory remarks on the Definition of the History of Philosophy. Second Period, Dogmatism and Scepticism. The three principles of Stoicism, Epicureanism and Scepticism are necessary; in the first there is the principle of thought or of universality itself, but yet determined in itself; the abstract thought is here the determining criterion of the truth.

Hegel's Lectures on the History of Philosophy offer one of the best points of entry to his philosophical system. The second volume (dating from 1825-6) covers a thousand years of ancient Greek philosophy; this is the period to which Hegel devoted by far the most attention, and which he saw as absolutely fundamental for all that came after it. This edition sets forth clearly, and for the first time for the English reader, what Hegel actually said. It forms part of OUP's Hegel Lectures series, presenting accurate new translations accompanied by editorial introductions and annotations.
