This book traces the development of the dominance of the Austrian hapsburgs in eastern Europe as they established themselves as eventual rulers of Austria, Hungary, Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia. The latter was the setting for severe fighting as the Austro-Hungarian army tried and failed to resist Prussian attempts to seize the region. In this book, acclaimed French Army expert Martin Windrow examines the history and uniforms of the French Foreign Legion, from its service in the Carlist War of 1835-36 to World War II and beyond, debunking many of the prevalent myths surrounding this formidable force.

For those of us who have collected Osprey's Men-at-Arms series books on military units and uniforms since 1969, this coffee-table size book is certainly a "Celebration".
Hard-bound and cased in a blue cloth cover, this almost 400-page book showcases the illustrations that have appeared in the 450 titles of the series. From "The Ancient World" to the "Modern Era", the book is subdivided into several chapters that cover warfare and the clothing worn by the warriors of each era.
The illustrations are beautifully printed in color and are full-page. As with the original series, there are brief notes for each illustration describing the various articles of clothing, weapons or insignia depicted in the artwork.
The book starts with an introduction by Martin Windrow, who has been with the series, on and off, since 1972. He gives an historical perspective on the development of the series which began as an afterthought to an aviation publication and is now, forty years on, a highly successful series with several spinoffs.
It appears that almost every illustrator who drew for the series is represented including the icons of the genre like Angus McBride, Gerry and Ron Embleton, Mike Chappell, Richard Hook and Ron Volstad. A short biographical sketch of the artists is included at the end along with the complete list of 450 titles in the series so far.
If you enjoy military history and especially the clothing worn by the warriors through the ages, this $100 book is money well spent and will reward with hours of enjoyment.

I bought this book because I am a huge Osprey fan. After receiving it, I realized it was less a book on military equipment/uniforms, and more book celebrating the artwork. IT IS CHOCK FULL OF ILLUSTRATIONS, moreso than I though it would be. A GREAT coffetable book. Highly reccommend it for collectors, and anybody interested in military artwork.

I recived your book few days ago, but I was quite disappointed about its conditions. In fact it presents a big spot on half of the cover (front and back)and the inner pages are twisted. Besides the golden image and words of the title are demaged. I examinated the book and the pack and I think that the book was in contact with water or hmidity during the storage and not the shipping. A mistake can always happen, but it's sad having an highly illustrated book in such conditions.
