Bruce Culver, Bill Murphy. Many of the variations in colors and patterns on World War II German vehicles were caused by variations in the paints (almost unavoidable in wartime), and, to a much greater extent, differences in the way the paints were applied.

Bruce Culver, Bill Murphy. The normal (ideal) method of applying virtually all paint was by using a standard spray gun. Most tanks and heavy vehicles even had engine-driven compressors to provide the needed air pressure for pairting. In most situations, individual vehicle crews were responsible for painting their equipment.

Wanted one of these for years... and now I've got one. Been out of print forever. I'm completely satisfied.
A word though for those who might not be familiar with this series or type of book: they are NOT tech data sources on WWII German armor. You will NOT find data on ranges, weapons, armor thicknesses, engines or anything else of that ilk. The title says it all: Panzer Colors. This book covers how the stuff was painted, what colors were used, camouflage schemes and the like. Mostly black & white photos and a few pages of color renderings. It's designed to be a resource for model building & painting.

After many years of searching, I finally got all three of these books. Since they are all similar in format & layout, I'll summarize all three here. Colors 1 was published in 1976, Colors II in 1978 and the third in 1984. Each book can stand alone quite well & provide the reader with a ton of great B&W photos, 15 pages of color plates from the beginning of WW2 to the very end. Each book is paperback 95 pages, vs. the 48 pages of an "In Action" book.

Panzer Color I provides a short review of the interiors, method of application, the use of foliage for all types of vehicles, wheeled and tracked from every theater in every season, urban and rural backgrounds.

Panzer Color II covers the markings of the German army panzer division. Panzer Color III focus is on the non Army units such as SS, Panzer grenadier divisions, Sturmgeschutz units.

I would recommend this book to any scale modeler out there that is striving for accuracy. This book, along with the rest of the set, provides a great deal of information regarding the colors and schemes used by the Heer and the SS for the duration of WWII. Please remember that it can be extremely difficult to reproduce accurate colors on a page in a mass produced book that is 100% accurate to real life, but this book does a good job and provides the RAL#'s (where appropriate) to help reproduce the correct color scheme. The other thing that this book and the rest of the set does really well is to present a good representation of the various camouflage patterns, both "approved" and improvised that were used by German forces. This set of books I would consider essential research material for all those rivet counters out there that want to make their models as accurate as possible. While not the only work that covers this topic, this set of books is the most comprehensive and easy to use that I have found.

This book goes over camouflage schemes and markings of German military vehicles covering the entire range of war years. And all fronts. The book has many nice black and white war time photos. They show the various vehicles with they vast variety of schemes used. And the different methods used to apply them.
Though I love the photo's, they are no very easy to use for reference in painting. But there are color plates of the various camouflage schemes shown in the photos and discussed. These will come in very handy for the modeler.
I will be getting the other two volumes of this series.
