In 1975, Fleming condensed this book into a 33 page booklet - in the New Jersey's Revolutionary Experience Series entitled "The Battle of Springfield" - and I'm sorry to say that this abridged work, also out of print, is the better history of the two, for in its brevity it makes fewer errors. Fleming is an engaging writer, a novelist and author of historical fiction as well as several excellent histories.
A native of Jersey City, New Jersey, Fleming graduated from St. .The Forgotten Victory: The Battle for New Jersey–1780. Peter's Preparatory School and from Fordham University in 1950, serving a year in the United States Navy before he started college. Fleming served as president of the Society of American Historians and the PEN American Center. Fleming published books about various events and figures of the Revolutionary era. He also wrote about other periods of American history, and wrote over a dozen well-received novels set against various historical backgrounds.

Before her marriage, his mother, Katherine Dolan Fleming, was a teacher in the Jersey City Public School System.
