I am new at looking for snakes in the wild, so I purchased this book from a recommendation on a website. I am from the same area as the authors are from, so I may be a little biased. I thought the book was very informative. I like the recomendations of the equipment to use when looking for snakes. I was just a little disappointed in that they talked about artifical cover more than natural cover, I guess I will like it better when I have the areas to do those type of setups. I really liked the photographs and description of the snakes and really appreciated their conservation efforts. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to get started in finding snakes.

Not only is this a great overview for understanding how to maximize your chances of finding scaly critters, the sense of humor that permeates this book makes it just that much more enjoyable a read! The concern the authors express for preserving the hobby by preserving the animals and our ability to seek them out rounds out the book to make it a required purchase.

My son really loves this book. I was happy to be able to find one that was informative enough for him.

Outstanding color pictures and lots of them. Could have been a little better written but still a good read. The numbers and diversity of serpents encountered in the field by the authors was noteworthy and most interesting.

When spring comes, my field herping is almost certain to be more productive with the techniques in this book. A must for beginning field herpetology enthusiasts.

I was expecting more from this because everyone raved about it. I've been an field biologist for 23 years and grew up chasing everything, etc. as a kid on the Alabama Gulf Coast, so I didn't find anything in this book that I haven't known, figured out, or learned myself 20 years ago or more.

Good for amateurs, but pros will yawn once, then put it on the shelf and forget about it.

I enjoyed the first edition and the second is fine, but I was expecting a completely new book. Instead I paid full price for 38 new pages. Be aware, this book is fine, but don't think that it is a sequel, it is a second edition with some expanded content.

This book isn't about hunting (the outcome of which, in my book, is dead rattlesnakes) it's more about conservation, and is written with a degree of revery that I found unpalatable. I did learn a few things about their environmental requirements, but nothing earth-shattering. To me, the only good rattlesnake is a dead one, I kill them every chance I get, so this author's take on them was disappointing at best.
