The Battle of the River Plate was the first naval battle in the Second World War and the first one of the Battle of the Atlantic in South American waters. The German heavy cruiser Admiral Graf Spee had cruised into the South Atlantic a fortnight before the war began, and had been commerce raiding after receiving appropriate authorisation on 26 September 1939.

Three smaller British cruisers closed in on a German warship which, so. .into the hearts of a nation unwillingly at war once again.

Three smaller British cruisers closed in on a German warship which, so Hitler had boasted, could out-sail any ship powerful enough to damage her, and out-gun any ship able to keep up with her – an invincible ship. So began the Battle of the River Plate, story which has its duplicates in British naval history, but which nevertheless brought pride and inspiration.

This is a small history of the combat career of the Graf Spee, culminating in the Battle of the River Plate and its scuttling off Montevideo. In this small package there is a lot of information provided. Although this book is old (1972) it holds up very well and is well worth having as the book in your library in this great maritime adventure of World War Two.
Oh, there is a small appendix on how the Soviet Navy saw the destruction of the Graf Spee - written while Germany and the USSR were tied together by their non-aggression pact, it is an absolute hoot, and I would almost say that the book is worth getting to see it!

If you wish to learn the actual facts of the battle of the River Plate presented in a clear way with detailed appendices, this is the only book you need to read. I began my novel An Honorable German, (a World War Two naval epic published in 2009), with the war cruise of the Graf Spee culminating in the Battle of the River Plate or Rio Plata as the Germans called it. I first started researching the book in 1980 and corresponded with the Senior Navigation Officer of the Graf Spee and read everything ever published on the Graf Spee until 2008 when I signed the final proof of my manuscript. So I did my homework.

This is the only accurate summation of the battle I read. Other authors mix things up, tell the battle from one side. This book is model of clarity and just the facts.
