This work is grounded in contemporary evidence on current practice in small firms. Such evidence was gathered by face-to-face interviews within the firms over a four-year period. In this paper he surveys the literature on the failure of small firms and argues that there is a need to focus attention on those factors which contribute to the demise of male and female owned firms in the 'demarrage' phase of the development. In Ghana, small and micro enterprise owners (SMEO s ) face a lot of business management challenges and it is alleged that they suffer, mostly, in terms of their financial management practices.
