A great historical tragedy, such as the story of the 1871 Commune, deserves a great historical treatment, so it is pity that Stewart Edwards has merely provided a very good one. It can be confidently recommended to anyone interested in the subject, though beginners are likely to be put off by the inelegant, alltoooften ungrammatical academese in which it is written. More knowledgeable readers will notice a string of obvious little errors (Place de Vosges, PalaisRoyale, la Guillatiere, for example) and wonder uneasily how many less evident mistakes there are.
