Compelling. This stand-alone is easy to follow and difficult to put down. It is violent, good people die but there is vengeance and justice. No drag-you-down drama.

Realistic story of cops who retire from the force and now work on their own, no longer hampered by law enforcement regulations.

Believable characters with distinct personalities. Excellent dialogue, thought-provoking and humorous.

'Revenge is an act of passion. Vengeance of justice.
SAMUEL JOHNSON'

“I had a nun when I was in grammar school used to say she took her coffee black and bitter, just like her life,” Boomer said.

“What do you want, Steve?” “To enter my house justified.”

No desire to re-read this story. I am interested in other works by this author.

As Val Kilmer said in the movie TOMBSTONE, when Wyatt Earp went after the red-sashed Cowboys for killing one of his brothers and critically wounding another, "This is not revenge - this is a reckoning!" Boomer and his fellow Apaches go after one of the biggest and strongest drug lords in NY after his boys shoot up a restaurant killing, among others, Boomer's niece. And while the task may initially seem daunting, and a mission that is certainly one that is against-the-odds, they play like Grandmasters in a chess match, taking one important piece at a time off the chessboard. Carcaterra has not only developed a great story and characters, but has also managed to throw in several really good surprises, including, for example, what connections Nunzio (introduced in the previous book APACHES) really has to the criminal world, which just adds icing to the cake. Definitely a worthwhile read.

I noticed Lorenzo Carcaterra when I read his novel SLEEPERS. I'd never read a more intense and beautiful novel. There's a moral dilemma wrapped into the fiber of the plot that takes your breath away. It was a great story. I've read every novel from Carcaterra since. Some are good, others are just okay - typical crime novels. This novel, CHASERS, falls into the latter category. I'll read the next from Carcaterra hoping he can reach the heights of SLEEPERS once again.

The language gets too "streetwise" and while it is contrived, it's TOO gangsta.

I have now read all of his books, each one is better than the one before. I don't know how I missed him, but he is great. I highly recommend his books. They get you at page 1 and keep you until the end. You will find yourself gasping and surprised at each one! He is a true talent. So sorry I am done with all of them.
