Sophie Rivers - lecturer in English - has been seconded to a nearby college for a term to get a computer project up and running. The college is a short walk from her home and has more mod cons than where she usually works but she soon realises that there is something odd going on there.

For a start there seem to be very few students and management seem to want to oppress the staff as much as they possibly can. Then there's the new contract of employment which all lecturers are expected to sign. When a computer technician who had wanted to speak to Sophie urgently dies in mysterious circumstances Sophie finds herself involved in crime once again.

This was an interesting and intriguing read following Sophie as she tries to work out exactly what is going on at George Muntz and why Richard Fairfax, rich local business man seems to want to be friends with her. Her off/on friendship with DCI Chris Groom is well done too and I thought all the other characters were well drawn and interesting.

It makes a pleasant change to read a crime novel set somewhere else apart from London - this series is set in Birmingham. The book is well written and I feel the author really brings Sophie to life. She is a likeable character even though she is far from perfect and doesn't always make the best decisions.

Seconded to work on a computer project at George Muntz College, Sophie finds herself missing the rather rundown surroundings of the prior educational institution where she had been a lecturer in English. George Muntz College is far more concerned about the well being of the Managers of the College than the technical or academic staff.

Then a young tech's body is discovered in a garbage skip and a lecturer in computer studies has to be hospitalized for psychiatric problem. Meanwhile Sophie finds herself threatened by possible accidents and harassment.

One think I really like about Sophie is her randiness when it comes to an attractive male, although she has some appalling bad luck when it comes to her choice in men.
