by Tony Park

Writing a book was a much bigger endeavour than putting together a feature story for a magazine or newspaper – the difference between taking out a kayak for a quick paddle on one of Sydney's rivers and crossing the Atlantic in a rowboat.

Braedan's barbed taunts about Tate joining the national parks service because he was too scared to do his army service festered under his skin. A soldier in starched camouflage fatigues stopped him at the entry to Government House and Tate showed him the invitation to the awards ceremony. He was nodded through and directed to a car park.

Thriller writer Tony Park can be best described as an Aussie cross between Wilbur Smith and Tom Clancy. Looking forward to reading more titles. The Independent Weekly). See all Product description.

Loved it - reminded me so much of various stages of my life growing up in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe - the bush war, the viscount disasters, the slang we used, the awesome wildlife, war vets etc - amazing that someone from another country and upbringing can write a book so 'close to home' !

I have read and enjoyed most of Tony Park's books and this is probably the most challenging one as it covers the dangerous and disturbing history of Southern Rhodesia under Ian Smith through to the current day disastrous dictatorship of Robert Mugabe.

This story is based on the lives of 3 families, 2 white and one black, during that tumultuous time. Tony's love of Africa, especially the wildlife, shines through once again via his "good" characters, both black and white. He does not shy away from the violence and hatred of the time and the people who made that happen.

I like novels with a historical background that tell you more about the era - this is an era which has not featured in many novels and Tony brings it to life brilliantly. Tony Park writes great adventure stories set in Africa (he has been called the modern day Wilbur Smith). He lives in Australia but spends a lot of time in Africa and his love of Africa is a major feature of all of his books.

I purchased my Kindle copy at a reasonable price when it was first released in August 2011. Since then the Australian publisher has almost doubled the price and it is now around the same price charged for the print version in local discount department stores. Unfortunately for Tony this will definitely have a negative impact on Kindle sales of this book. Many Australian publisher prices for new Kindle releases are now the highest in the world.

I absolutely loved this book. Having lived in Rhodesia / Zimbabwe from the age of 2 in 1951 until 1995 when we moved to Tanzania, I related to everything that happened. I recall when the Viscounts were shot down and the shock and disbelief we all felt. Since moving to South Africa in 2001 I have not visited Zimbabwe, so reading about current happenings was very interesting. I have been recommending this book to everyone I know. Let's hope some of them do read the book and enjoy it as much as I did.
