Shadow of the Serpent, Тень змея (by Ashton David, 2016) - аудиокнига на английском.

This is a first in a series, and as such it seems to meander a bit in the POV. The author shows us the thoughts of so many people that I found I was losing interest in the main character. Some, of course, will be in further books, but it felt too much like they were trying to introduce too many people at once. A lot of them didn't really add to the story or move it along.

There's a lot of politcal discussion in this story. A lot of it I could follow, some I couldn't. The author is overly fond of similies. It seems like very thought any of the characters had reminded them of something else, or became a way for them to ponder something else. So the story felt as if it meandered off into areas that bogged the story down.

I wasn't really impressed with Inspector McLevy's solution to the case. He doesn't really deduce anything as much as he falls into the solution.

There's enough here to give me hope that the next books will be better trimmed of excess information on the times and the characters, and thate McLevy himself becomes the focus rather than just another character in his own story.

Decent, but there's better historical mysteries out there.

To put it simply....I like historical fiction. Once you get done with George MacDonald Fraser and various others, there is very little to choose from. And then, VIOLA!! Along comes David Ashton.....

Brilliant stuff right from the "git go" (Texas term) and this guy can write!! I have started on the Inspector McLevy series and thankfully there are many more to go after "Shadow of the Serpent" with a meticulous usage of both Scottish and English, period correct characters, descriptive narratives and a just plain superb story.

I highly recommend the fastidious mystery from David Ashton. And I will be spending many of my shekels on this author....

As a fan off the Radio series wanted something I'd not heard.. This for me was it, a good story well written love the use of quotes and Ashton's use of the language enjoyed the emotion of the novel as you can hear and feel the characters as if you'd be listening to them a very good novel if you are a Mclevy fan strongly recommend it . Have now purchased two others books of his to read which for me says a lot have these novels in my kindle at a good price and so a Happy Teddy Bear !

This is a real bargain in the Kindle store, which is why I decided to give this book a try. I am not much of a thriller or mystery novel reader and can only cope if they are well written. That is certainly the case here and I thoroughly enjoyed it. McLevy is an interesting character and the author weaves the story expertly to keep the reader's interest, with some lovely gentle humour. This book inspired me to buy the other two McLevy Kindle books as well and I am really enjoying the second one. Highly recommended if you like Agathy Christie type stories.

Most enjoyable and interesting read. I love books set in the Victorian era. Kept me interested and entertained.
The main character was easy to visualise. If I can "see" the characters in my head and hear their voices, I know
it's been a good book. This was one of those books.

it was good - great fun putting yourself back in time, which it did very well - but it seemed a bit too 'cloaked' in mystery for me. i had trouble following the plot line of so many political characters. might be better to read in print instead of kindle. kindle makes it too difficult to flip back a chapter,,,,,

I really enjoyed this. I thought it was well written. Surprise ending. Characters were well developed. Made me want to read more by novels about Inspector McIvey.

Ashtons Mc levy is one of the best, pity we dont see any more on the horizon, as the Show of the Serpent certainly creates a desire to read of of the series.
