A good ten-minute spy story stretched to 393 pages by long meaningless conversations by pointless characters who have nothing to do with the plot. Because of the good prose it had me fooled until page 278 when I threw it onto the floor. The Russia House A Borzoi book George Smiley Novels Series.

If you like exciting action, that thirst will not be quenched. This is an interesting but somewhat painfully slow read at times. The characters are reasonably well formed, but it’s like there are too many of them. I questioned what purpose some of them really played in enhancing the story line. Taking in account the timeframe this work was published helps, as I the reader, harkened back to what I was reading in the media in the late 1980’’s, early 1990’s. This is a love story really between people and country; in this case Russia.

I love, love, love this book, and it is my favorite of this writer. Not the usual George-Smiley-type intrigue, but written with so many lovely moments and memorable lines. Highly recommended for anyone familiar with Le Carre.

A masterpiece of espionage fiction. A good story, well told. Oh, that more authors could write with such erudition in this genre. Thank you Mr let Carre.

Le Carre at his tradecraft best. Never allows you to ignore a line. Reminiscent of The Looking Glass War in its densely packed plotting but with more hope
