Washburn's breezy, briskly paced third Literary Tour cozy (after 2009's Huckleberry Finished) takes Atlanta tour organizer Delilah Dickinson to New Orleans' French Quarter. Delilah's hopes for an uneventful trip, one spent shepherding college professors to the annual Tennessee Williams Literary Festival, are soon frustrated by the careerist infighting and emotional tensions among her charges. The group is particularly incensed to discover that one of its members, the ambitious Dr. Michael Frasier, plans to question the authorship of the novel's namesake play.

His hand closed on the bare flesh of my upper arm, below the sleeve of my dress. His grip was gentle, but strong enough to be warm and firm. My arms wanted to lift up and go around his neck. Because, unlike what I had told him about playing Mark Twain as a younger man, what we were doing now was not a good idea. Mark must have sensed the tension that sprang up in me, because he let go of my arm and pulled his head back.

Climb on board the Southern Bell for a cozy little mystery in Huckleberry Finished.
As a literature buff and native Missourian, I was drawn to this book set in Mark Twain's hometown of Hannibal, Mo. Accomplished mystery writer Livia Washburn deftly weaves in Twain quotations and trivia to give the story a unique feel.
In this second book featuring travel agent Delilah Dickinson, a tour group is paddling up the Mississippi River on a casino riverboat to tour Hannibal. One of the passengers, Ben Webster, accuses the casino of running a rigged operation and Delilah is told to make sure he disembarks in Hannibal. But Webster turns up dead in the engine room and suddenly things aren't as bucolic as the old-time riverboat suggested.
Delilah's experience at the Gone With the Wind tour in Frankly My Dear, I'm Dead makes her eager to clear things up. She gets help from a Mark Twain impersonator, who may be hiding a little something between his bushy mustache. In fact, a lot of secrets are being uncovered aboard the Southern Belle, including a grizzly event that happened exactly one year ago.
A classic mystery with a detailed setting, a tough lady detective in a small-town police department and a wide cast of characters make this is an enjoyable summer read. The price of $4.47 makes it even more appealing.

This series is just getting better and better. I love the literary references and quotes and tiny bios of the main theme. This book, of course, was about the life of Mark Twain. It centered upon his journey up and down the Mississippi.

Delilah Dickenson takes her tour on the Southern Belle paddle-boat up from St. Louis to Hannibal, Missouri. The town of Hannibal gets into the theme and dress as in Twain's time. Also has unique stores by the docks. At the end of the novel, Ms. Washburn gives you tour ideas to make your own trip.

Delilah is stopped from enjoying the trip herself when a member of her group tries to pick a fight in the Casino. This quickly morphs into a murder investigation.

Delilah also falls in 'like' with the actor (or is he?) portraying Mark Twain himself.

I actually had my jaw 'drop' at one of the scenes when we begin to unravel the investigation with Delilah. I had entered Delilah's tale and was shocked. You have to read the book to see what caused the shock but it was page 261.

I will be reading the next volume in this series.

All the deception and intrigue in multiple levels and interesections really enteretained me in this book. Delilah Dickenson is a lovely character. I did miss her daughter and son-in-law in this book though as the daughter was the only one of te pair in this book and only then by telephone. I feel bad for Delilah because she always seems to find men who aren't what she believes them to be in one way or another. After her messy divorce with her abusive and murderous husband, she deserves happiness, but it doesn't seem to be her lot in life. I also really felt for the mother in this book. I won't say why to allow the reader to discover the character on his or her own, but she really is pityable in the end as are, possibly, a few other characters thought of in the right light. This series has just the right amount of suspense and complexity to make it a fun read while still giving the reader a sense of mystery. I can't wait for the next book.

This mystery just flowed along, much like the main characters slow, smooth, Southern drawl! There almost seemed to be NO mystery at all for the first half of the book - just the basics. Then about 2/3 of the way through, the floodgates opened, and there were all sorts of twists, turns, and surprises. Characterization was quite good - you got a real feel for the personalities of the main characters without actually getting inside their heads. Most of their actions and motivations were quite realistic and plausible. The 'bad guy' was bad to the bone, and proud of it! This was a fairly short book, and an easy read. No explicit violence, sex, or bad language - it was a 'cozy', closed-room mystery with a fairly intense ending.

Note on Kindle formatting: Perfect, or nearly so. I did not notice any issues, and if there were any, they were so minor as to be invisible.

I got this as a kindle freebie and found it to be an interesting and enjoyable light read. The premise of the story is unique, a Mississippi paddle wheeler that operates as a tour boat. The operator of a literary themed tour agency is on the boat when she is asked to intervene in a dispute between one of "her" passengers and the boat's casino operators. The passenger believes the roulette wheel is rigged and has reacted by trying to strike one of the gaming staff. Justifiably he is ruled off the boat and will be asked to leave at the next stop.

At the next stop, the tour operator can't find her recalcitrant passenger. Did he already get off - is he hiding - did something happen to him? While investigating this situation and preparing his refund, her daughter back at the office learns that this passenger is using a fake name and identity. She also learns that it's just been a year since another mysterious death on the same boat, with the anniversary date coming up shortly.

The parents of the past victim are on the boat as a memorial to their daughter. Are they involved with this current disappearance?

An actor playing Mark Twain is helping in the investigation, as well as emerging as a love interest for the heroine. What are they going to find, and will they survive the adventure?

This is the second time I've read this book and found it was just as good as the first time. Great characters, plotting, and a touch of romance. You'll love it.
