Ian Rankin is now the United Kingdom's bestselling crime writer.

Once John Rebus was a Para, served in the elite SAS. Now he's an Edinburgh policeman who spends time evading his memories, missing promotion opportunities, and right now ignoring a series of crank letters. Ian Rankin is now the United Kingdom's bestselling crime writer. His 15 police procedurals featuring the dour Scottish Detective Inspector John Rebus are beginning, at last, to attract a devoted-and deserved-following in this country. St. Martin's has just published this, Rankin's 1992 collection of short stories, and I can't think of a better way to be introduced to John Rebus and his creator.

The Black Book is a 1993 crime novel by Ian Rankin, the fifth of the Inspector Rebus novels. It is the first book to feature Siobhan Clarke and Morris Gerald Cafferty appears as a main character. It is also the first book where Rebus is based at St Leonards police station. Rebus finds himself with a number of problems on his hands.

The Black Book: An Inspector Rebus Novel.

Inspector Rebus Novels. He finds a Black Book, which was on Holmes' person when he was attacked. Inspector Rebus is working on a big case involving a crime boss who has slipped through the Edinburgh policeman's fingers before. Martin's Publishing Group. It's written in code, and seems to contain cryptic details on 'extra-curricular cases' he's been working on. And Rebus has a horrible feeling that this Black Book was why he was attacked, and sets out to find out why. This is perhaps the best Rebus novel I've read to date. Rebus has little faith that this will be the time, yet he badly wants to put this particular criminal away.

While investigating the murder of an off-duty oilman, Inspector John Rebus stumbles upon the investigation of a copycat murderer nicknamed Bible Johnny

I was not overly impressed by the first book in the Rebus series but liked it well enough to give the second and the third book a try (the series also came highly recommended). After the second book, I was hooked and it gets better and better. Black and Blue has intriguing characters, a great plot and setting, and DI Rebus becomes an increasingly real, multifaceted person. I truly liked this book.

One reads this novel wondering if Rankin has bit off more than he can chew, as he weaves various strands of plot concerning a murdered oil rig worker, two different serial killers, and an old case that has come back to haunt Inspector Rebus. Rankin succeeds in tying up all the loose ends (but one) in one of the most intriguing and ambitious mysteries in his Rebus series. A particularly fascinating aspect of this novel is the character known as Bible John, who is based on a real life serial killer in Scotland by that same name. Rankin gives you more than your money's worth here-- he could easily have saved some of the content for another novel.

I love Ian Rankin's work and have enjoyed every book of his that I have read. It came as no surprise then to find Black and Blue meeting my usually high expectations.
Rankin's characters are real people with real strengths and flaws. No larger than life heroes charging in to save the day. And the villain doesn't always get caught. Just like in real life.
The story moves along at a good pace with just enough sub plots to make you think.
I cannot recommend this author highly enough.

I am a casual mystery reader and really enjoyed this Rebus novel. It's my third Rebus; I am not a purist and have read Rankin novels based on Kindle availability and not in chronological order. I don't think that has diminished my enjoyment of the series at all and I noticed just this month more of the series has been added to the US Amazon site. I am of Scottish heritage and the family tales of the brooding drinking Scotsman really are vividly portrayed by Rankin through John Rebus. Here is my summary of Rebus: A man in middle age, given to heavy drinking, divorced, lonely, but excellent at being a detective and obsesses over cases while neglecting his own health safety and personal relationships. A pattern I have found with the series is Rebus works tirelessly to find the criminal(s) and figures everything out by the end of the novel but the reader is not "rewarded" with the character being given accolades or promotions. In fact John Rebus ends most of the novels in more trouble than he began it with. A great series!

Plenty of details in other reviews, but if you're wondering about just trying the Rebus line...

I have been VERY happy to find Rankins Rebus series after enjoying Connelly, Crais, White , Corcoran and some others. Great character depth and interplay. Cynical, gritty .......noirish, you'll likely enjoy your time in DI Rebus' world.

I've read 5 of these so far and would give 3 x 5 stars, 1 x 4 stars and this book 3 1/2 stars.

John Rebus is up to his usual idiosyncratic antics, with a new twist. A good read like all of Ian Rankin's books.

Each book in this series just gets better. Rebus grows-but not too much-he matures, but doesn't out grow his story.
