The book is a collection of pen portraits of some of the creatures of Gerald Durrell's Zoo - and some of the lessons Durrell learned about making real and sustaining his childhood ambition of having his own Zoo. Menagerie Manor was the second of Gerald Durrell’s books I read, just after My Family and Other Animals. First, it is a quintessentially Durrell book, with all the charm and style Gerry had become famous for in the dozen books he had already written. This was some time ago, during my student days in Madagascar. Poetic and graceful, amusingly sardonic on occasion, but always affectionate, Menagerie Manor is an effortless read.
With the help of an enduring wife, a selfless staff and a reluctant bank manager, the zoo grows.

Gerald Malcolm Durrell, OBE (7 January 1925 – 30 January 1995) was a British naturalist, zookeeper, conservationist, author, and television presenter. He founded the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and the Jersey Zoo on the Channel Island of Jersey in 1959. His memoirs of his family's years living in Greece were adapted into two television series (My Family and Other Animals, 1987, and The Durrells, 2016–2019) and one television film (My Family and Other Animals, 2005).
