The Boilerplate Rhino: Nature in the Eye of the Beholder; Scribner, 2001.

With humor and intelligence, David Quammen's Wild Thoughts from Wild Places also reminds us that humans are just one of the many species on earth with motivations, goals, quirks, and eccentricities. Expect to be entertained and moved on this journey through the wilds of science and nature. Quammen writes very short, often interesting essays in this book, but I found his all-American childhood, stories of his visits to the Cincinnati Zoo, the history of the old family house more.

Thank you, David Quammen for this amazing journey through these essays, for leaving my head full of amazing images of history, people, places, and our natural wild world. I was raised in Montana and Idaho, I now frequent the rivers of Idaho, dipping my feet in as often as possible. You made me smile, ponder, and escape.

Natural Acts'" "Wild Thoughts from Wild Places," and "The Soul of Viktor Tronko. Quammen, one of those extraordinary writers who can wring all the blood-wet drama out of science without ever resorting to mysticism or melodrama, here tracks man-eaters through history and legend, then deep into their present domains. Have you ever wondered why people eat chicken eggs but not chicken sperm?

In short, connoisseurs of the Quammen (The Song of the Dodo, 1996) style will relish the daredevil you-are-there . There are paeans to urban pigeons as & and to the late Edward Abbey and one of his books in particular, Desert Solitaire

In short, connoisseurs of the Quammen (The Song of the Dodo, 1996) style will relish the daredevil you-are-there writing of the sportsman: kayaking on class V rivers with near-death encounters with & (vortices) and boulders, trekking a high moor in Tasmania, documenting telemark races-in which skiers slalom, skate, jump, and perform the absurdly difficult telemark turn (named after a town in Norway)-not to mention trout fishing in Montana. There are paeans to urban pigeons as & and to the late Edward Abbey and one of his books in particular, Desert Solitaire. The personal and sentimental figure in essays on family, friends, and spouse.

A collection of thoughts, essays, stories, and profiles from nature provides a look at such different places as the central Amazon, the South Pacific, and Cincinnati, detailing such adventures as kayaking on a Class V river in Chile and tracing the spread of the Ebola virus

Superb writing, essays on nature that are inspiring, moving, thought provoking and stylistically graceful, integrative, honest, and an island of wonderful writing and thinking. Rare and much welcomed. I am reading all of Quammen's books of essays and am already anxiously anticipating major grief when I reach the end of the lot. Perhaps I shall have to simply start reading them all over again!

This collection was recommended to me by a university instructor and author. I was very confused for the first half of the collection and due to some excellent writing I was totally confused by the end. There are several selections that do not seem to fit however all are extremely well written and insightful. Each selection taken by itself is thought provoking and complete. By that I mean that they have a beginning and easily conclude. Do not cause yourself the brain damage I encountered by trying to tie them together. Enjoy them as individuals and the writing that flows as if it were understandable poetry.

David Quammen's collections of essays and longer work are all equally fine non-fiction pieces. He compares favorably to some of the very best non-fiction voices—John McPhee comes to mind.

A slight warning, though. Quammen is slightly pessimistic in his view of mankind's impact on global ecology. His message can be a little discouraging on occasion.
