Single Variable Calculus book.

Single Variable Calculus book. This was a required text, but for the most part it seemed to be a good teaching. It was nice to get a second opinion on topics and go more in-depth. Probably recommend to those taking a class, because without instruction it's a tougher read. I actually enjoy Stewart's Single Variable Calculus quite a bit. It approaches problems intuitively, has plenty of applications, and serves as a nice reference.

In conclusion, this is not an AP Calculus oriented text, but a standard single variable text with some relatively minor additions covering vectors and curvilinear motion.

We all learn slightly differently. For engineering and science based problems, some may wish Stewart included dimensional analysis in his problem solving steps. In conclusion, this is not an AP Calculus oriented text, but a standard single variable text with some relatively minor additions covering vectors and curvilinear motion. If this is your class text, you may want to consider supplementing it with one of the books mentioned above.

I used this book when I did my Undergraduate Premed Classes at the University of Miami. com User, October 3, 2008. This was a great book because it came with a CD that provides a visual way of teaching and introduction to Calculus. The CD's got modules; lots of test questions; and various games to assist you in the learning process.

James Stewart's CALCULUS texts are world-wide best-sellers for a reason: they are clear, accurate, and filled with relevant, real-world examples. His patient examples and built-in learning aids will help you build your mathematical confidence and achieve your goals in the course.

In writing the book, James Stewart asked himself: What is essential for a three-semester calculus course for scientists and engineers? Single variable essential calculus: early transcendentals.

Stewart's CALCULUS, Fifth Edition has the mathematical precision, accuracy, clarity of exposition and outstanding examples and problem sets that have characterized the first four editions. In this Fifth Edition, Stewart retains the focus on problem solving and the pedagogical system that has worked so well for students in a wide variety of colleges and universities throughout the world. He has made refinements to the exposition and examples, to ensure that students have the best materials available. Further support for students and instructors is now available through a vast array of supplementary material. This text does Not include a CD-Rom.

This book, at times is amazing and great, but at other times is terrible.
Pros: Gives proofs on most of the theorems. Plenty amount of problems to work out, most of them pretty good ones.
Cons: Too much stuff packed into one book, big and heavy with content most will never require and will probably never cover. Some of the sections have some of the worst examples I have ever seen in a textbook, covering only the basics and never explaining and covering some of the harder more complex problems that they give as problems to work in the book. I would enjoy if the book does explain some of the theorems or concepts in words instead of just giving mathematical proofs for everything. Some of the problems given to do, were extremely complicated to the point that sometimes my math professor could not explain them (nor could others when I presented the problem to them).

Shipping times and other details were just perfect. Book is like new, as expected. And I saved a bundle in not buying the latest editions but just the one prior.
In my particular purpose, it did not matter if the problems are in the same order or any other minutia differences with the most recent edition. I needed a solid college-level book and I got it.

Accept that you will be buying this book solely so that you can answer the questions for homework. The explanations (and its very generous to call them that) are written as if the author is trying to remind himself what he already knows. If you expect a book to help you learn the material you’ll need something else.

Very well written. Along with the solutions manual its a great tool for teaching yourself calculus. Im about half way through with very little confusion. Book arrived in like new to new condition

One scarcely needs a review for a textbook like this: the student has no choice in the matter. That being said, one could do worse than to be assigned this book. The chapters are for the most part well written, and there don't seem to be any typos or mistaken figures (as is so often the case with high school textbooks). The weakest point of the book is the proofs, which are often too condensed to be readily intelligible. These can simply be skipped though. There are weak points (like the exposition of substitution method or Cauchy's proof) but most of it is quite good.

It is however essential to get the well-written and indeed indispensable student solutions manual for this, as the real learning comes from seeing how many problems are worked out in detail. If you have the online e-book as well, the videos of the southern gentleman explaining things are outstanding.

The only other suggestion is that one get a hold of Banner's "Calculus Lifesaver", which will see one through the foggier expositions in the all to frequent cases where the book is unhelpful and your professor runs by, rather than through, the material.

Larson and the revised Thomas are no better.

But above all, be prepared to work hard. Calculus as it is taught nowadays is not a very in-depth course, but there are enough 'moving parts" to its methods to keep a student busy. If one can't make a go of it, this really quite adequate textbook is not to be blamed.
