This book contains everything you need to know to start advanced studies of Linear Algebra and its applications (which are too numerous to list). Although I am skeptical of the textbook medium as a modern way for people to learn going into the future, I personally still love reading textbooks and Prof. Strang does a great job of cutting to the chase. If supplemented by his MIT OpenCourseware videos and interactive applications for the computer, you will learn in no time.

While both start at the beginning, the second book moves faster, with harder problems and less detailed explanations. It is also a bit less clear as a result.

Introduction to Linear Algebra book. These follow the book very closely and are is an even better lecturer than he is a writer. This informally written text provides students with. Some friends complain of a certain "Strang-speak" in his book: a certain awkwardness with words that sometimes obscures a point. The overall rating of this book (4 star at the moment) can be misleading for people who want to use this book alone to learn linear algebra.

This book is clearly closed bound to the online course (which I watched briefly). It is not a stand alone book on linear algebra by itself. The book constantly jumps into new concepts without explaining the ideas and bases behind them. If I didn't know that it is the text book for the online course, this book feels more like a note taken by a student during a linear algebra course. I found myself constantly guessing what the the texts in the book are referring to.

I don't want to spend time watching the online videos, that's too time consuming due to the limited time I have. Although I'm able to make progress on this book ( still reading it), the process has been boring. The aspect of finishing this book is not promising. I'm considering finding another linear algebra book.

I think the proper title for this book probably should be something like "Linear Algebra for MIT online course", or "Notes and exercises for Linear Algebra".

I never thought that linear algebra is that useful in real life. I was enrolled in a master program and my first course was computer vision. There were massive amount of math and mostly were linear algebra. I felt like I lacked all enough comfort with linear algebra and thought that I could have understood many topics much better if I got a good book. Hell, this book is awesome. It has all what I need specially SVD and PCA. I don't care much about solving problems as to understand the meaning of linear algebra and its logic. I must admit that prior reading this book I had good grasp of what a matrix is and how we can formulate our data as a matrix, which opened the world of applications I can apply all the techniques of linear algebra on. Dr.Gilbert is a man who knows how to deliver high quality information to you, but you as a reader must also have the role of analyzing what you read and try to find an application of interest in your head where you can practice what you read. I looked at 10s of books before deciding to buy this one, and the only book which I felt comfortable with was this one. The only problem is that this book is expensive, but in my opinion, this books deserves every dollar and is a must in any machine lerning, artificial intelligence, computer vision, game programer or any field engineer library

I wanted a re-introduction to Linear Algebra after taking a course in "Elementary Linear Algebra with Differential Equations" as an engineer back in college. As a note I have only worked through chapters 1-6, and looked over other portions of the text. But, I found it very refreshing how the author managed to connect the concepts from the very basics of vectors.

The masterful thing about this book is that by adding just a little bit each chapter and connecting it back to the Four Fundamental Subspaces, orthogonality, basis, and linear independence, every new idea is very easy to grasp. The problems range from easy to medium difficulty (though these usually depend on tricks which you may/may not easily get) and help in building your abstraction muscle and thankfully shy away from the tedious computational realm most of the time. I find the way I look at matrices and systems of equations have been forever molded by this book. Perhaps most importantly, and the reason I believe this book is stellar, is that I believe this book is ideal for self-study. I did not even use his online video lectures, I simply did the examples along with him in the book and did all of the problems with solutions in the back. I say this not as a math genius, but as someone with an interest in learning some math a couple of hours per week. This book has given me the confidence to pursue a more abstract treatment of the subject, as well as a numerical linear algebra text which fleshes out the complexity of matrix decompositions and such.

This book is a great accompaniment to that series, and indeed, you won't really get the full effect of the course without this book. But by itself, it reads like someone's course notes. Very little is really explained in the book. In summary: Essential side dish to the MIT course, but pretty much useless on its own.

A clear, very well organized explanation of key linear algebra concepts. Many worked examples. Like most math books, requires several readings of critical sections to fully understand and appreciate. There are still a few places where concepts were put to work before they were fully explained, and that caused me to give this book 4 instead of 5 stars.

Great introductory book to practice and learn Linear Algebra concepts, more importantly get back again for a refresher when you need to. Liked the way the videos are organized on youtube and MIT OpenCourseWare website to cover the materials in the book. Thank you very much for the book sir.

So this is the standard text, all over the country. There is a reason for that. It's intuitive and easy to read. Much better than the textbook I used in college. It's the kind of textbook you keep on your shelf for 40 years, and use when you need to brush up. Not like the one I threw away 10 minutes after I got out of the final.
