### by Peter Kloeden,Phil Diamond

Phil Diamond, Peter Kloeden. The primary aim of the book is to provide a systematic development of the theory of metric spaces of normal, upper semicontinuous fuzzy convex fuzzy sets with compact support sets.

Phil Diamond, Peter Kloeden. An additional aim is to sketch selected applications in which these metric space results and methods are essential for a thorough mathematical analysis. This book is distinctly mathematical in its orientation and style. The reader is assumed to have some previous undergraduate level acquaintance with metric spaces and elementary functional analysis.

Let X be a metric space and E(X) the class of fuzzy compact sets on X, equipped with the generalized Hausdorff metric D which take the supremum on the Hausdorff distances between the corresponding α-level sets. The aim of this paper is, on the one hand, to analyze the compactness and separability of E(X) with respect to the compactness and separability of X, and on the other, to study these properties on the subclass Ec(X) of level-continuous fuzzy sets.

Peter KLOEDEN School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Murdoch University, Murdoch, WA 6150 Australia. Received 31 March 1988 Revised 18 July 1988. Abstract: Two classes of metrics are introduced for spaces of fuzzy sets. Indeed, many properties and applications of (~, d) can be regarded as generalisations of results involving the space ~co(R n) of nonempty convex compacts endowed with the Hausdorff metric 6. Both are complete metric spaces, and very recently compact sets have been completely characterised in ~n (Diamond and Kloeden ), thus extending the Blaschke selection theorem (see Lay ) to fuzzy sets.
