Book Synopsis : We live in a world where humans are using more energy with each passing year. This popular text explores the science behind energy production and its impact on the planet. While acknowledging that energy-driven climate change is the dominant energy issue of this century, author Richard Wolfson allows the science to speak for itself; students receive the tools and information they need to weigh challenging trade-offs and draw informed conclusions.

Richard "Rich" Wolfson is the Benjamin F. Wissler Professor of Physics at Middlebury College since 1976. He is the author of numerous articles and books. Wolfson has taught several courses at the Teaching Company

In this new study of energy use and global climate change, Richard Wolfson outlines basic science concepts as well as specific, contemporary applications in energy production and their environmental consequences.

Energy, Environment, and Climate is structured on the premise that climate change is the dominant energy-related environmental issue of the twenty-first century. Traditional concerns like pollution and conservation of energy resources are covered with clear, scientific explanations. Unique to this text, a full five chapters―about one-third of the content―are devoted to climate and an understanding of the energy/climate link. Included are over 250 photographs and illustrations.

Although I didn't enjoy the class, the textbook itself was pretty easy to read and read in a fairly conversational tone. I particularly enjoyed that aspect of it. That being said, the exercises at the end of each chapter were HORRIBLE and almost impossible to solve without a lot of prior knowledge of conversions and electricity. I wouldn't recommend it as a textbook for a 1000 level class like the one I was in, but maybe a 2 or 3000 level class where the students already have strong quantitative skills that will assist them in applying the concepts learned in the book.

Pretty good book, I used it for an environmental studies class and it explained many concepts very well. The only issue would be the math problems at the end of each chapter. It would be good to have a table with conversions there with the problems so that I don't have to search through the book to find the proper conversion, but it is manageable. Overall, pretty good and you'll know more about the different types of energy sources and issues facing the environment.

Really well written, I learned a ton while teaching a course with this text. And I think he did a really good job at one of the hardest parts, which is giving a clear-eyed view of the pros and cons of nuclear power. In stark contrast to introductory physics texts (including Wolfson's own fine and concise Essential University Physics), this book is one where you really might want to spring for the latest edition.
