Metalloporphyrin reactivity and catalytic properties can also be controlled .
Metalloporphyrin reactivity and catalytic properties can also be controlled by modifications of the porphyrin core. 1791,1792 Several X-ray structures of four-, five-, and six-coordinate NiII complexes with oxa-, thia-, and rins are known. Porphyrin-binding proteins cover a vast range of function, including reversible binding of gases, small molecule detection, oxygen activation, intracellular electron transport, and catalysis.

Porphyrins (/ˈpɔːrfərɪn/ POR-fər-in) are a group of heterocyclic macrocycle organic compounds, composed of four modified pyrrole subunits interconnected at their α carbon atoms via methine bridges ( CH−). The parent porphyrin is porphine, a rare chemical compound of exclusively theoretical interest. Substituted porphines are called porphyrins. With a total of 26 π-electrons, of which 18 π-electrons form a planar, continuous cycle, the porphyrin ring structure is often described as aromatic.
