Unit IV Kansas Plants: Trees, Shrubs and Woody Vines Information Trees, Shrubs and Vines  .. Eastern Kansas is the boundary between eastern deciduous forest and the tallgrass prairie. There are many different types of forest ecosystems, just as there are many different types of prairie ecosystems. The main forest community in eastern Kansas is the oak-hickory forest. Vines are hairy and can contain the oils even when dead. Don’t ever burn firewood that has the hairy vines-oils can get in smoke, and then your eyes and lungs. Most people will react to the oils on leaves.

Unlike herbaceous plants, shrubs have persistent woody stems above the ground

Unlike herbaceous plants, shrubs have persistent woody stems above the ground. They are distinguished from trees by their multiple stems and shorter height, less than 6 m-10 m (20 ft–33 ft) tall. Small shrubs, less than 2 m (. ft) tall are sometimes termed subshrubs. Shrubs are perennial woody plants, and therefore have persistent woody stems above ground (compare with herbaceous plants).

This handbook, specifically designed as a reference for the general reader, is illustrated with 952 photographs and 114 drawings and maps arranged for easy, on-the-spot identification. The photographs, remarkable for their quality and detail, were taken by the author from living materials. They illustrate leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds, bark and winter buds so that the plants may be identified easily at any time of year.Descriptions of the 114 species covered in detail list common and scientific names and include pertinent general commentary with useful background facts. The distribution of each species is indicated by a diagrammatic map of Kansas showing areas of location. The guide to the identification of plants, keys to species, glossary, and other important features will successfully introduce the subject to anyone interested in the woody plants of Kansas and surrounding areas.

This book is extremely helpful to anyone interested in our environment or who is planning or actually has a native habitat garden -- in the State of Kansas. It is very valuable to me since I live in Kansas and am working toward just such a garden. It can also be important to anyone who lives in climates similar to those in Kansas. A great deal of time and effort has gone into this book for which I, for one, am thankful. Strange plants pop up in my yard occasionally and instead of pulling them out, I turn to the book to find out just what they are. I've learned a lot from this book and consider it a valuable addition to my collection of books regarding the environment, habitat and gardening in general.

Great for the amateur naturalist-photos are great and text though scientifically-oriented of course, also uses common verbage for the layperson. Not sure if some classifications may have changed over the years, but overall this is an interesting & useful book!

This is an old discarded 1969 library book (Dewey Decimal "R 582.16 Stevens"). Honestly, it may have some good information but it's illustrations are black and white. I'll do my best to cross reference with google. Information is condensed so not a lot of superfluous reading. I imagine several new trees/plants have come and gone in almost half a century. I need to read my descriptions better.

Trees, Shrubs, and Woody Vines in Kansas is a wonderful addition to any reference collection. I have used this book for years and have found to it to be a useful tool in identifying native trees and shrubs in Kansas. The black and white photos are a nice compliment to the written text. Each plant entry has pictures of the leaves, male and female flower, buds, fruit, and trunk. These make it easy to identify plant material when in the field or at a desk. The written text is very descriptive of each major plant part pictured. However, the terminology is rather technical and not easily understood by the casual nature lover. I would recommend this text to anyone who is interested in learning how to identifying native plants in Kansas.
