Dragonflies and Damselflies of Louisiana. Celebrate the beauty and diversity of nature with this field guide to Louisiana's dragonflies and damselflies.

This book is a field guide to all the species of Odonata (dragonflies and damselflies) in the eastern United States and Canada, east of the western boundaries of Ontario, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana. I chose state and provincial boundaries rather than the exact middle of the continent because naturalists’ interests and odonate record keeping are typically at this level.

A very useful book for both the identification of Dragonflies and Damselflies of Europe on the field and for the simple pleasure to browse spectacular images. This book is a revelation. Sono felicissimo di aver contribuito a questo magnifico libro.

Detailed species profiles provide concise information on identification, distribution, flight periods, behaviour, habitat, status and conservation. Other sections cover biology; how to watch, photograph, record and monitor Dragonflies; conservation status and legislation; and introduced exotic species.

Celebrate the beauty and diversity of nature with this field guide to Louisiana’s dragonflies and damselflies. This level of detail can’t be found in any other guide currently available; it provides both top and side high resolution scanned images of 118 species of dragonflies and damselflies known from the state of Louisiana and adjoining states. All species are represented by life-sized images, and smaller species are shown as both life-sized and enlarged images. In addition, both male and female specimens are provided for most species. A photographic "head shot" of each species is also included and most species showing variation in color pattern are represented by multiple photographs. Close-up photographs illustrating taxonomically important characters are given for most species.

This book is showing frontal images the head of dragonflies on each species. This is , I believe, very unique and helpful information when you identify the species. In Japan this kind of photos were available in the illustrated dragonfly books published in 1960's and 70's but hardly seen lately. When I was a school boy I made the presentation of collected dragonflies in the school and wrote the similar pictures of frontal view of dragonfly head(face) to show how different shape and color of different species, to the visitors.
Anyway photos are very clear, and this is a must item for all the dragonfly lovers in the world. I am very happy to keep this book.

I am not an entomologist but to me it is a great book with many pictures (full body and close ups) to help identify the many species.

Some very useful stuff here but buy Dragonflies and Damselflies of Texas first (By Abbott) there are no life histories, ecology, ranges or species behavior discussed in this book. There is a bad choice illustrated for a male Libellula vibrans, yes there are some males of this color scheme but a typical blue colored male isnt shown ....(where is the blue for the "Great Blue Skimmer???..look in any other good Dragonfly book)...several species I've found in Louisiana aren't even listed... as an additional reference work it might be useful, but this is obviously a well meaning amatuer effort with some corrections and additions this could become a very useful book on Louisiana Odonates. For an excellent general guide to the region buy Abbotts book

Realistic
This reasonably priced guide is useful far beyond the state in the title and will allow the serious hobbyist or casual dragonfly watcher to identify most species across the southeast. The photographs are unique in presenting the insects and critical identifying features as they appear in life, so it is a much better option for odonate watchers using only binoculars than other guides that require collecting specimens. Also, the living insects have a distinct beauty in the patterns of colors and the eyes, in particular. This guide captures that beauty effectively and is an attractive little book to own regardless of your level of interest in these wonderful insects. Kudos to the team responsible for putting it out and hopefully we'll see more contributions to the knowledge of midsouth insects from this group.
