Brock’s book provides the reader with a fascinating collection of papers published by scientists who have made major discoveries in the biological sciences that helped establish the field now known as microbiology. Brock pointed out in the Preface that “Microbiology developed into a science almost exclusively during the 19th century” and that the “research papers were therefore published predominantly in German and French, with a few in English (and even fewer in other European languages such as Dutch and Russian).” He provides translations for all those papers that were originally not written in English, and he shortened some articles “to render the book accessible for students.”
Brock divided the book into six parts, each of which contains a group of papers, presented in chronological sequence in each part, which cover overarching topics such as “Spontaneous Generation and Fermentation” (Part I), “The Germ Theory of Disease” (Part II), “Immunology” (Part III), “Virology” (Part IV), “Chemotherapy” (Part V), and “General Microbiology” (Part VI). He shows, for example, Antony van Leeuwenhoek’s 1677 paper about “little animals observed in rain-, well-, sea-, and snow-water,” Ferdinand Cohn’s 1876 article about “Studies on the biology of the bacilli,” and Joseph Lister’s 1867 paper “On the antiseptic principle in the practice of surgery.” Furthermore, there are articles about “Methods for the study of pathogenic organisms,” published by Robert Koch in 1881, “Modern chemotherapy,” published by Paul Ehrlich in 1908, and “… the antibacterial action of cultures of a Penicillium …,” published by Alexander Fleming in 1929, to name a few.
When I read this book, I felt I was invited by Brock to travel from the beginning of the biological sciences to the fascinating world of microbiology. The book is classic and timeless, and provides the reader with excellent information about the history of microbiology spanning the time frame from 1546 to 1940. I like the 7-page “Historical Introduction” as well as the “Comment” sections Brock added at the end of research papers, which place the scientific discoveries into perspective. For example, Brock commented on Cohn’s article that “by Cohn’s time, the technology of sterilization had proceeded effectively even in the absence of a scientific basis.” In my opinion, this is a book that can attract students from high school and college levels, and also seasoned scientists and general readers who like to gain or refresh their knowledge about the origin and development phases of microbiology.

This is a treasure trove of papers, many of which are translations, of the classic papers in the field of microbiology, dating back to times before microbiology was even invented! I've used versions of papers from this book in my classes for years now and finally decided it was time to buy myself a copy instead of paying my library fines for keeping their copy too long. Brock's little commentaries following each paper are not only great but in themselves constitute an important slice of the history of microbiology, as he was the author of one of the definitive microbiology text-books used the world over, besides being one of the earliest insider historians of the field.
