The magic mountain itself is a myth and a symbol with multiple meanings and charms.

The magic mountain itself is a myth and a symbol with multiple meanings and charms. The German magic mountain is the Brocken, up whose dangerous paths Goethe’s Mephistopheles leads the delinquent Faust, to join in the lawless and phantasmagoric delights of the Witches’ Sabbath, or Walpurgisnacht. In the Walpurgisnacht chapter of the novel Settembrini quotes Faust (as he often does): Allein bedenkt!

La Montana Magica fue la obra que logro para Thomas Mann, el insigne escritor .

La Montana Magica fue la obra que logro para Thomas Mann, el insigne escritor aleman, el Premio Nobel. In this dizzyingly rich novel of ideas, Mann uses a sanatorium in the Swiss Alps, a community devoted exclusively to sickness, as a microcosm for Europe, which in the years before 1914 was already exhibiting the first symptoms of its own terminal irrationality. The Magic Mountain is a monumental work of erudition and irony, sexual tension and intellectual ferment, a book that pulses with life in the midst of death.

La Montana Magica book. Der Zauberberg The Magic Mountain, Thomas Mann The Magic Mountain is a novel by Thomas Mann, first published in November 1924. It is widely considered to be one of the most influential works of 20th century German literature. The narrative opens in the decade before World War I. It introduces the protagonist, Hans Castorp, the only child of a Hamburg merchant family. Following the early death of his parents, Castorp has been brought up by his grandfather and later, by a maternal uncl 706.

For The Magic Mountain is a work of sick-lit par excellence: a novel that convincingly portrays illness as a state of mind as well as of body (though Mann does not shy away from the more visceral aspects of the latter). This is a novel mystifyingly overlooked by Virginia Woolf in her 1926 essay On Being Ill, in which she bemoans literature's failure to make illness one of its "prime themes" alongside "love and battle and jealousy.

quoted Herr Settembrini, as he rose. I can’t let myself be outdone!. The outer door opened, next moment the inner one as well. It was Joachim, returned from society. the Italian he flushed, as Hans Castorp had done; the deep bronze of his face deepened by another shade. Oh, you have company, he said. How nice for you! I was detained, they made me make one of a table of bridge. They call it bridge, he said, shaking his head, as they do outside, but it was really something else entirely

This novel works like a huge and beautiful testimony of the years before the Great War in Europe. It transcends the limits of the genre and becomes a great Encyclopedia full of fascinating characters, archetypes and allegories. The intelectual battle between Naphta and Settembrini (the religious and social view between the liberal and individualistic perspective) is, maybe, the most perfect chronicle of a philosophical and political controversy that hasn't end yet.
At the end we all scream with the chilling scene of the duel and cry with Hans Castorp`s fate.
