What a difference two stories can make. Until the penultimate story in the collection, I was convinced that "Afternoon Delight" was headed for a three-star review, the rating I reserve for books which aren't bad but don't have much to recommend them either. Then I read the two final stories, which were so lyrical they singlehandedly elevated the book from three to four stars.

My favorite story was Craig J. Sorensen's "Square Loophole" (the aforementioned penultimate story in the collection), in which the narrator makes love to his shy and modest wife, whom he has never seen fully nude, in the light of day for the very first time. The writing is poetic and lyrical, the sex breathtakingly beautiful. It's a very classy story in an otherwise unremarkable collection, worth rereading several times.

My second favorite story would have to be Jeremy Edwards's "Another Hole Week," which is basically seven days' worth of erotic tickling with a climax at the end. Maybe it's because my partner and I do a lot of tickling, and maybe it's because Edwards has such a wonderfully luscious writing style, but whatever it is, this story resonated with me and will undoubtedly be reread a few times.

My other favorites:

Andrea Dale's "Breakfast in Bed" (a story with a heart, showing how breakfast in bed can have the power to reignite lost passion)

Bella Dean's "Nooner" (a bit of naughty role playing after an exhausting night shift makes for a fun romp)

A.D.R. Forte's "Straight-Laced" (an illustration of the mystery of love and sex without any attempt to explain it)

Sophia Valenti's "Chloe's Confession" (a man gets very excited at the thought of what his new girlfriend got up to with her ex)

Jacqueline Applebee's "Knit One, Purl Two" (showing how knitting and fantasizing can lead a man to desire being tied up)

Quinn Gabriel's "Matinee" (in which a blindfolded woman has sex in a movie theater, unsure what's happening around her)

Jayne Pupek's "The Awakening" (a short lyrical piece that doesn't really work as a narrative but is lovely to read all the same)

The remaining stories I found pretty bland. They weren't bad per se; they just lacked sophistication. Two of the stories, Kristina Wright's "On Island Time" and Jason McFadden's "View of a Room," struck me as being far too syrupy with their nauseating "babe" and "my wife's angelic face" and "my beautiful wife's so and so." The other stories did strike the right tone but just weren't very memorable in my opinion. Several of them had sex scenes which went on and on and on and were frankly pretty boring. I never thought sex scenes could be dull, but parts of this collection (especially the middle section) proved otherwise.

This book is a compilation of short erotic stories. Tada! Review finished... No, seriously, its a compilation of short erotic stories. Some stories are better than the others, a few can be amateur pornish. I bought this with the intention of sharing it with my wife but haven't done so yet because she's really not into reading so I just tell her some of the stories as if it happened to people I know. Strange I know. If you want something you can pick up from time to time to distract you from the daily grind, this book should be as good as any. With the added benefit of being slightly informative in terms of things to try in the bedroom.

Sometimes I think that too many people write erotica. Its like romance novels -- everyone thinks they can write one, and do write one, and then some how end up getting it published, as if this alone will shove it up to the ranks of something actually good, and worth reading. Which of course it does not.

This collection of stories makes me think of those rows, and rows of unimaginative no-talent romance novels you see wasting away in second-hand book stores. There is little actual good writing material in this compilation, and nothing nearing true excellence. As someone who is on a continual search for brilliant erotica, this fails to meet that standard. Other titles such as "Aqua Erotica" edited by Mary Anne Mohanraj and "Oysters and Chocolate" edited by Jordan LaRousse and Samantha Sade serve much better, having in their depths several real gems of the 'literoctica' movement.

Having said all that, this collection will pass the time. It certainly didn't get me steamy hot, or really strike me with any original story lines or risky ideas, and in my estimation, isn't good enough to be for myself AND my partner -- he has an exacting taste like mine -- but if you're looking for something to kill a bit of time either in the bath or on the bus and you need a titillation factor, this might be the book for you.

In the end, this book seems like just one of many, many mass produced collections of mediocre erotica. I'm sad I spent as much on it as I did.

Mmmm... mmmmm... mmmmm good. This is yet another erotic collection that I read too fast because I just couldn't help myself. What stood out about this collection was that each story, less one, involved only two people. However, that did nothing to stop the eroticism that dripped from page to page. I must have read this book twice as I was reading it once. Reading about sex is fun. Imagining sex while about reading sex is arousing. Switching places with the characters in the story you're reading is lustfully decadent. The intimate description of sex makes you feel like a voyeur. The feelings brought on by such raw passion will make you so randy that rabbits will be like, "wow"!

I love to escape and Alison's collections are my very own personal island in the Bahamas. Of course the natives are all women, all nude, all nymphs... but you know. :-)

My favorites:
`Early Birds'
`Country Pleasures' (my favorite)
`Nooner'
`Chloe's Confession'
`Popsicle in the Library' (second favorite)
`To Feel Sexy'
`View of a Room'
`Date at South Sation'
`Night Shift'
