Paddy Kitchen, who has died aged 71, was a novelist, biographer and art critic. By 1972 she had completed a quartet of novels with A Fleshly School, Linsey-Woolsey, and Paradise. But her key gift was as an unswerving friend to countless writers and artists. Born in Battersea, she grew up amid dogs, cats and horses in a large house, The Firs, in Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire. Further novels followed: A Pillar of Cloud (1979), The Golden Veil (1981), Blue Shoe (1988), as well as guides to novel-writing, Poets' London and, best of all, empathetic biographies of Patrick Geddes (1975) and Gerard Manley Hopkins (1978).
