TS Eliot's Four Quartets lay claim to be some of the greatest works of poetry ever written. If you enjoy this poet, you will probably also enjoy the poems of Rainer Maria Rilke, who with TS Eliot and Pablo Neruda are arguably the three greatest poets of the last century. Part of the greatness of these poems is that Eliot is mature, inspired, without an eye to literary theorists, or fads and fashions, and not seeking to show how clever or well educated he is.

Four Quartets is a set of four poems written by T. S. Eliot that were published over a six-year period. The first poem, Burnt Norton, was published with a collection of his early works (1936's Collected Poems 1909–1935. After a few years, Eliot composed the other three poems, East Coker, The Dry Salvages, and Little Gidding, which were written during World War II and the air-raids on Great Britain.

The second of Eliot’s Four Quartets, East Coker was published in 1940, four years after the original publication of Burnt Norton. The title refers to a small parish in Somerset connected to Eliot’s ancestry and whose church would later become the final resting place of Eliot’s ashes. It was while writing East Coker that Eliot thought of creating a quartet of poems that would reflect the idea of the four elements.

But Eliot speaks of the Four Quartets as among his highest achievements, and readers interested in spiritual exploration will respond to the poems. For example, the sequence reflects some Hindu concepts and includes a scene from the Bhagavad Gita in The Dry Salvages
