Alfred Jarry is perhaps the least known among the important writers of his generation. Both Burroughs and Ballard were inspired by him, he had a profound influence on the British authors associated with New Worlds magazine, and was admired by artists from Duchamp to Paolozzi as well as any number of playwrights, including Artaud, Beckett and Ionesco. He gives us an unmatched and vivid picture of the belle epoque's avant-garde, of which Jarry was an important, original part.

In short, Brotchie gives us the narrative version of what Jarry himself produced—a pataphysical life. Drawing on a wealth of new material, Brotchie alternates chapters of biographical narrative with chapters that connect themes, obsessions, and undercurrents that relate to the life. The anecdotes remain, and are even augmented: Jarry's assumption of the "ubuesque," his inversions of everyday behavior (such as eating backwards, from cheese to soup), his exploits with gun and bicycle, and his herculean feats of drinking.

Erik Morse Your new book, Alfred Jarry: A Pataphysical Life, is the most comprehensive history of the Ubu bon-vivant yet published in English. We see in the works of these groups a sort of alternative canon of Modernism that is a long way from the dry theories and formalism that, in the UK at least, is generally associated with the avant-garde. Atlas (there are four of us) maintains that there has always been a strain of the avant-garde that is not po-faced, but passionate, and above all, entertaining.
