Jean Mead draws characters so well, they stay in the mind as if they were people one meets in real life. I particularly like the way the villain of the piece received his just desserts, very clever and (to me) satisfying. The setting of Welsh slate quarries in the very beginnings of the unions is painted realistically and the reasons for unions at that time are very clear. After reading the first one I couldn't wait to get the second and the third.

This book is dedicated to my daughter. With the information that the. Reason her father never tried to write. About a great love story before was. Because he had never experienced one. Until he met her mother. And the hearth-fire and the home-acre, To go with the old grey Widow-maker? She has no house to lay a guest in-. But one chill bed for all to rest in, That the pale suns and the stray bergs nest in. She has no strong white arms to fold you, But the ten-times-fingering weed to hold you-. Out on the rocks where the tide has rolled you.
