A base for readers to catch-up on news, events, publications of author Jean Mead. Mead's novel The Widow Makers is inspiring reading; a classic tale, full of all the ingredients which make for the finest novels. Based in the mid-19th century, it tells the story of the young Standish family, who move from the coalfields of Lancashire to the slate quarries of North Wales. The eldest Standish boy, Tommy, is something of a changeling; he desires a different life and ruthlessly goes in pursuit of his dream of the grandeur and riches of the landowners' class.

A good book love Emily and Joe going to start the next one I need to see Tommy get his come uppance. Jean Mead’s The Widow Makers is the first of a trilogy of historical fiction books detailing the lives of the members of two families, the Standishes and the Bellamys. The story begins its focus on the life of Joe and Emily Standish and their young son, Tommy. It is the middle of the 19th century, and from his eleventh birthday, Joe has worked as a coal miner in the Galloway pit of Lancashire.

Jean Mead draws characters so well, they stay in the mind as if they were people one meets in real life. I loved this series of books. After reading the first one I couldn't wait to get the second and the third

Jean Mead draws characters so well, they stay in the mind as if they were people one meets in real life. I particularly like the way the villain of the piece received his just desserts, very clever and (to me) satisfying. The setting of Welsh slate quarries in the very beginnings of the unions is painted realistically and the reasons for unions at that time are very clear. After reading the first one I couldn't wait to get the second and the third.

Until he met her mother. And the hearth-fire and the home-acre, To go with the old grey Widow-maker? She has no house to lay a guest in-. But one chill bed for all to rest in, That the pale suns and the stray bergs nest in. She has no strong white arms to fold you, But the ten-times-fingering weed to hold you-. Out on the rocks where the tide has rolled you.

This is a well-written, well-researched story that could have earned five stars. However, it lacks an appropriate ending. Actually, it has no ending at all. There is no conclusion, no closure, no tidying up of hundreds of pages of angst. Perhaps the author has a sequel in mind? As is, the story just stops, almost in mid-sentence. Certainly in mid-paragraph. Anyone knowing how this would finish would not spend the time to start it.
This is a good example of the classic “Dirigible ending,”

Oh gosh. I just found out there IS a sequel. Actually, if you don’t have the second book, this book doesn't make much sense. Maybe I missed something dealing with an eBook. In any case, this particular title is really half a book. When you get to the end it’s like “Huh?”

The storyline was wonderful, interesting, and well developed. Each character and scene was well described so I felt like I was there and knew each person. A story about a young married couple who find a new job and life in Wales where the main character finds a job in a quarry. Their first born son is ambitious, very intelligent, and ruthless disregarding the loving home and sacrifices his family made for him.
I am anxious to read the second book.
The author did a good job writing to fit the dialect.

I nearly laid this book down. The beginning seemed a bit slow but, all of a sudden my interest was piqued and I couldn't stop reading! Then it ended and I had to have the 2nd book! I think you will probably not be satisfied with just the first book. The story begins with a quarrying family forced to move when the quarry was shut down. They migrate to Wales to begin a new life working in another quarry. Sadly their eldest son is very ashamed of his parents and will do anything to raise himself above his parents. I think most adults would enjoy their story.

The characters in "Widow Makers" are so well defined that one instantly becomes invested in their lives. I found myself thinking and worrying about them when I wasn't reading. The lives of miners in Lancashire and quarrymen in Wales in Victorian times were unbelievably hard and it is amazing that honor and deep abiding love could flourish amid the hardships.

All the grit, grime, endurance and selflessness of the main character Joe come through - I felt as if I knew him as a real person.

A truly absorbing read! I am now reading the sequel, "Widow Makers: Strife," and it is just as good. I will be feeling bereft once I have finished it!

I was really interested in the beginning of this book, a long time ago in Wales and the old Slate industry that is so dangerous. I liked the main characters a lot but then their little boy grows up to be sleazy and cruel and selfish. I didn't care to read about him at all and felt the book went a bad direction. The next book is about him and I for sure don't want to read a whole book about a character like that.

Seldom do I write book reviews and then only for what I consider an outstanding book. This is certainly a book to write about... I loved it! The author brings each character alive, so the reader feels like part of the scene itself. Can't wait to read the next Jean Mead book.
