Over the years I've read all the Louis L'Amour westerns. Some of them I've read three to four times. Louis is not only the best western writer, he's also one of the best storytellers ever. I had the pleasure of reading each new L'Amour book as it came out. It was always welcome news when the new L'Amour western appeared in the book stores and drug stories.

L'Amour was prolific. He wrote three to four books a year for decades. Some of those books were 'deadline' books rushed out to satisfy his contract with the publisher. Even many of these books would get five stars from his fans. L'Amour was that good.

Then there are the 'super 5 Star' books like "Hondo" which are classics. I'm happy to say that "High Lonesome" is one of these best of the best L'Amour westerns. Buy it! It's a perfect story with a plot that will make any fan happy.

True bravery is not something learned or even forced. It comes from a sheer cussedness. Either you have it or you don't. Similar for honor.
Considine and Dutch and Hardy and the Kiowa are such men, even though outlaws. There was no way they could leave an old man and his daughter be fighting thirty odd Apache by themselves. Not if they still want to call themselves men. Even if it would cost them everything else...Loot, freedom, their own lives.
That is what Louis L'Amour writes about.
That is why we love his stories as his stories resonates with the warrior in each of us.

This isn't my favorite L'Amour, but it is a good read. I like most of his other books a little better because the follow the cowboy0opera standard of clear cut good guys and bad guys, the lead in this (Considine) is closer to the more contemporary mode of conflicted hero with a dark past. But I love Louie, a fixture of my youth when I borrowed these from my dad. And I still reread them, though I missed this one somehow, it was a first read for me and maybe not one I come back to.

I don't really want to go on about the stories (as I haven't finished the book yet) but Hannah's writing is exquisite and seethes with the heat and stink of humidity in Mississippi. Faulkner with a microwave and quantum physics. I just started reading his stuff, but it's all been consistently brilliant and mysterious. Get some.

I am, and always have been, a fan of Louis L'Amour ever since I picked up and read the first novel. His depiction of life in the old west was very real and true. In his stories, the landmarks are real, as I have followed his descriptions and found several of the places he wrote about. He will be sadly missed.
