Alexei Tolstoy, the creator of Buratino, Russia’s version of Pinocchio, was a distant relative of Leo Tolstoy. This thick book features the early years of Russia’s first emperor, Peter the Great, and it frightened Russian children because it was obligatory summer reading. Though he wasn’t an influential global thinker, he left an interesting legacy that’s also included in school curriculum. This year marks the 135th anniversary of his birth, so let's take a close look at his most famous works. While a historical novel, this book is clearly a child of its era because indulges it in propaganda.

The translation was not just simply disappointing

The translation was not just simply disappointing. It t was flat, mechanical - less than a facsimile of what was supposed to be a magnificent stature.

Series: Alexei Tolstoy's Peter the Great (1-3). its hero which gives the stamp of greatness to the book itself. Tolstoy's epic covers Peter's early life and rise to power prior to the Battle of Narva, and is rife with drama and history. Alexey Tolstoy was born in 1883. In 1918 he published his first full length work, Nikita's Childhood. In 1919 he fled from the Bolshevik government and settled in Paris. While Tolstoy leaves out some details of Peter's life, he makes up for it with a rich cast of characters, places, and historical events that shaped modern Russia. Not a well known book in the West, but an excellent example of Russian historical fiction from the Russian perspective.

I ordered the book because I am fully bilingual (originally Russian). Having previous experiences with amazing translations of "War and Peace" and a couple of John Goldsworthy books into opposite languages, I was curious if all classics could have been done in the same manner. "Peter the Great" is written in absolutely exquisite, vivid, multy-dimentional language, and I could not find any equivalent in my (fluent) English to get close to giving it a proper justice. The translation was not just simply disappointing. It t was flat, mechanical - less than a facsimile of what was supposed to be a magnificent stature. I actually could have done better myself. Ugh! Unfortunately, there is no "Zero Star" rating. Stay away, or learn Russian to have the literary experience of a lifetime.

I have read this book in the original Russian version twice - once in my teens, and then when I was older. It was so good that I recommended it to my husband, who is an american, and loves histoical novels. What a disapointment it was when we discovered that this book containes only the first volume. It abruptly ends in the middle of Peter's life, before he meets Catherine I, wins war with Sweden, and builds St. Petersburg. If you are really interested in reading this wonderful book, look for another publisher who has both volumes.

This is not the complete Tolstoi book in translation - much of the later Russian original book is cut out and the paperback book cuts off long before Tolstoi's full writing ends! Tolstoi's original carries through Peter's wars with Sweden and his later life, this one simply stops at the rebellion. It is not the complete book and should not be sold as if it were.
